The Tamizh Desiya Periyakkam (TDP) has urged Tamil Nadu Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar to invite the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) to form the government with the support of the existing number of MLAs and not to insist on a ‘majority’.

Addressing the media here on Thursday, TDP president P. Maniarasan urged Mr. Arlekar to allow actor-turned-politician C. Joseph Vijay to form the government with the support of 107 MLAs. He should be allowed to prove his majority on the floor of the Legislative Assembly on a date fixed by the Governor, he said.

The TDP, which had extended support to Naam Tamilar Katchi in the Assembly elections, alleged that Mr. Arlekar was ‘influenced’ by the BJP. It was the Governor who directed the officials to make preparations for the swearing in of Mr. Joseph Vijay as Chief Minister and the police to provide security cover to him. But he later asked the officials to cancel the ceremony and withdraw the security cover simply because the Congress had extended its support to Mr. Joseph Vijay in formation of the government.
