NEW DELHI: The Public Works Department (PWD) has identified 448 waterlogging hotspots across the Capital and issued a 10-point standard operating procedure (SOP) to monitor dewatering pumps ahead of the monsoon and prevent inundation.

The government said the SOP aims to establish a systematic procedure for the deployment, operation, monitoring and maintenance of dewatering pumps during the monsoon, ensure public safety, and maintain smooth drainage.

It mandates that pumps be operated on auto mode wherever automation is available, with continuous monitoring to check for vibration, overheating, unusual noise or leakage. Adequate fuel stock — sufficient for at least 10 hours of continuous operation — must be maintained for diesel generators, which are to be tested daily for 10 minutes along with operational checks of pumps connected to the backup system.

The SOP also lays down safety measures. “No electrical cable shall remain submerged in water. All unauthorised persons must be kept away from operating pump sites,” it states.

It further mandates de-silting of pumps after every spell of heavy rain and preparation of duty rosters at each pump house, clearly assigning responsibility.
