Marking a significant milestone in organ donation, two kidneys retrieved from deceased donor Dalu at the Kodagu Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS) in Madikeri were successfully transplanted into two patients at JSS Hospital in Mysuru on Sunday.

The procedure marks the first organ donation initiative undertaken at the institute and has emerged as a major life-saving achievement, saving the lives of two patients.

The director and dean of the institute expressed gratitude to the team from JSS Medical College and Hospital for extending their support for the kidney transplant procedures. The institute thanked Manjunath Shetty, head of the Nephrology Department and transplant coordinator, Vijaykumar R., professor of urology and renal transplant surgeon, Sachin Dharwadkar, professor of urology, Rajendra, urology OT in-charge nurse, Gavi Prasad, OT technician, and the other staff members involved in the process.

According to the institute, the success of the transplantation was the result of the coordinated efforts by doctors, nursing staff, administrators, the State Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation team and various supporting departments. “Our collective efforts have transformed into a life-saving initiative. We thank everyone who contributed to this noble cause,” the institute said in a press release.

The institute also conveyed gratitude to the family of the donor, Dalu, for consenting to the organ donation, noting that their humanitarian decision has received widespread appreciation.
