MLAs across party lines raised concerns over the absence of a scientific drainage system along National Highway 66 during the Malappuram District Development Committee (DDC) meeting on Saturday (June 27, 2026). They pointed out that rainwater was inundating residential areas during the monsoon.

MLAs Abid Hussain Thangal, T.V. Ibrahim, P.K. Nawaz, M. Rahmathulla and Kurukkoli Moideen sought immediate intervention. District Collector Vinay Goyal said a special meeting would soon be convened to address NH-related issues.

The DDC also urged the State government to fill vacant district-level posts, including that of the District Medical Officer (DMO), saying the vacancies were delaying the implementation of government schemes. The resolution was adopted at the meeting chaired by the District Collector.

A Health department official said 5,212 institutions, including schools, had been inspected under the ‘Clean Shot Malappuram 2026’ campaign to prevent monsoon diseases. The drive covered 315 restaurants, 1,189 hotels, 481 roadside eateries, 881 cool bars, and 328 anganwadis.

Officials found that 33% of food handlers lacked mandatory health cards. Action would be taken against establishments violating health and safety norms. Schools and anganwadis have been directed to chlorinate wells twice a week. Five persons infected with Shigella are under treatment and have crossed the critical stage.

As many as 412 cases were registered under ‘Operation Toofan’, with four squads conducting enforcement and awareness drives across the district.

Among the issues raised, Prof. Thangal sought early completion of the Kottakkal-Kakkathode bridge, the Rs. 3.9-crore building project at Government High School, Kuttippuram, and a service road between Vattappara and Valanchery.

Mr. Ibrahim called for a joint inspection of NH-66 footpath works, speedy completion of the Kadalundi bridge and approach road, reconstruction of the Anangadi-Tipu Sultan road damaged by sea erosion, and implementation of the proposed Malappuram Revenue Tower and the stalled Moonniyur-Velimukku foot overbridge.

Mr. Moideen sought a report on the decline in the district’s SSLC results. Education officials said 39,748 students had secured admission in the second phase of Plus One allotment against 57,855 seats, while 82,753 applications had been received. He also sought repair of the oxygen plant at Tirur District Hospital and restoration of pre-pandemic KSRTC services.

Mr. Nawaz sought measures to address waterlogging on the Moochikkal bridge-Devadhar road and expedite three bridge projects. Mr. Rahmathulla sought a new KSRTC service on the Manjeri-Kozhikode route, appointments to the pharmacy wing of Government Medical College, Manjeri, faster implementation of MLA and MP-funded projects, and early auction of abandoned vehicles in police stations.

The Collector directed officials to expedite MLA and MP-funded projects and urged the public to complete Census self-enumeration.
