Dakshina Kannada Deputy Commissioner H.V. Darshan, on Friday, said the administration has identified 92 areas with potential flood risk and 88 areas with potential landslide risk, and appropriate caution is being taken ahead of the onset of the southwest monsoon.

He was responding to the district-in-charge Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao’s direction to take suitable precautionary measures in areas prone to flooding, waterlogging and landslides after identifying them in advance before the onset of the monsoon at a review meeting here.

Mr. Darshan said silt accumulated in major stormwater drains (rajakaluves) is being removed using earthmovers and claimed that a majority of the drains were cleared of the silt by now.

Speaking earlier, the Minister asked officials concerned to make frequent visits to areas prone to flooding, waterlogging and landslides and take immediate action after assessing the situation. The work of desilting stormwater drains should be expedited. In this regard, departments concerned should work in coordination with each other, Mr. Rao said.

Noting that desilting work was in progress, the DC said eight locations where sea erosion was likely to occur were identified, and steps were taken to alleviate the risk. He said control rooms were opened at the district and taluk levels to operate round-the-clock for emergency disaster management.

While a team of the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) was already present in the district, NDRF teams were expected to arrive by the month-end, Mr. Darshan said.

Zilla panchayat Chief Executive Officer Narwade Vinayak Karbari, Superintendent of Police K. Arun, Deputy Commissioner of Police K. Ravi Shankar and others were present.
