The legacy waste site at the municipal solid waste management facility at Jawahar Nagar has earned a dubious international distinction by earning space among the 25 sites in the waste sector with the largest detected and quantified emissions rates worldwide.

The University of California, Los Angeles, as part of its 'Stop Methane Project’, collated the emissions data as seen by key satellite instruments, and ranked the sites based on the emissions rate. Jawahar Nagar ranked fourth, with 5.9 tonnes per hour of emissions rate, while the previous three slots were taken by Buenos Aires, Jakarta and Kuala Lumpur, with 7.6 tonnes, 6.3 tonnes and 6 tonnes per hour of emissions rate. Mumbai, ranked 12th, is the only other Indian city which has found a place in the list.
