CITU complains about illegal soil removal from Tirupparan...
The Hindu Bureau · 2026-06-27 · via The Hindu: Latest News today from India and the World, Breaking news, Top Headlines and Trending News Videos.

The CITU lodged a complaint with the Tirupparankundram police to take action against the alleged illegal removal of soil on Friday midnight from the Tirupparankundram kanmai.

The CITU district secretary M. Balasubramanian said following information that soil was being illegally scooped from the kanmoi in the Tirupparankundram area for a private company, a worker employed with the Madurai Corporation went to the spot to inspect.

“At that time, intercepting the trucks that were loading soil, he immediately informed the Tirupparankundram police and handed over the trucks to the police,” he added.

Consequent to this, the vehicles were detained at the Tirupparankundram police tation for investigation, he noted.

Regarding this, the Communist Party of India (Marxist) members led by Mr. Balasubramanian submitted a petition with the Madurai Corporation and district administration here on Saturday demanding immediate termination of the contract awarded to the private firm which is currently managing garbage collection for the Madurai Corporation.

M. Ganesan, Madurai district secretary of the CPI (M), through the petition, alleged that the contract company had been collecting significantly less waste than mandated by its agreement but falsifying data to secure State funds.

The party revealed that while the company is contracted to collect 900 tonnes of garbage daily, realities showed they clear about 750 tonnes.

“To bridge the deficit and illegally inflate the tonnage on record, the firm is scooping up heavy river sand and mixing it with the collected garbage to manipulate the weighbridge scales,” they alleged.

The party noted the firm has leveraged its machinery and access to execute large-scale sand and mineral theft across the region.

Several municipal councilors, particularly those representing the Left parties, have repeatedly raised their voices in the Madurai Corporation council meetings to flag the company’s illicit practices.
