Riding triples on two-wheelers without helmets has become a common sight across Tiruchi, raising serious concerns over road safety and traffic violations.

Unmindful of the dangers and despite repeated awareness campaigns and enforcement drives by the traffic police, many drivers continue to violate every rule in the book. Such violations are frequently noticed on major roads, school and college zones, and busy commercial areas across the city.

Road users said the practice had become increasingly common during peak hours, especially among youths and families travelling short distances. In several instances, children are perched precariously between riders without any protective gear, putting their lives at risk.

With summer vacation on, children are seen zipping past on busy roads on two-wheelers and scooters without licence. As many of them are unaware of traffic rules, lane discipline, one-way regulations, and proper use of indicators, they pose a threat to other road users as well.

Road safety activists alleged that the violations continue largely due to lack of deterrence. They urged the authorities to intensify vehicle checks and impose strict penalties to curb the practice.

“The violations are seen not only in the city but also in towns and rural areas. Police should take strict action against violators, and parents too must ensure that children are not allowed to drive vehicles to avoid untoward incidents,” said N. Saravanan, an activist.

A senior police official said regular enforcement drives were conducted and violators fined under the Motor Vehicles Act. He added that a fine of ₹1,000 was imposed for riding triples and riding without helmets. In the case of underage riders caught driving without a licence, police issue warnings and call parents to take custody of their children.
