Closure of Tasmac outlet

The Tasmac outlet at Thiruppalai, near Pillar No. 117, is causing inconvenience to residents. The shop is located close to a bus stop, opposite a temple, and near a school, raising safety concerns.

Residents’ welfare associations in the area have repeatedly petitioned the authorities seeking its closure. As the outlet is situated in a sensitive location, the authorities should examine the matter and take appropriate action in the interest of public safety and convenience.

District Collector and other officials concerned should look into the issue and take an early decision.

Save electricity

The lights installed beneath the newly constructed flyover on the Madurai–Natham Road, as well as several street lights in the Narayanapuram–Indian Bank Colony area, are switched on automatically around 6.05 p.m. every day. However, during the summer months, there is sufficient daylight well beyond this time.

By suitably adjusting the timer settings, the lights could be switched on later in the evening, thereby reducing unnecessary power consumption.

The National Highways Authority of India and the Madurai Corporation should review the timing of these lighting systems and make appropriate adjustments in the interest of energy conservation.

Reinstall statue

The iconic fish statue was removed from in front of Madurai railway junction in 2022 during redevelopment works. Though the Madurai-Ramnad Chamber of Commerce took up the issue and a proposal to reinstall it at the Corporation Tourist Plaza near the Veerapandiya Kattabomman statue was reportedly approved, it is yet to be implemented.

As the statue symbol is closely associated with Madurai’s heritage, the authorities should reinstall the statue at the approved location without further delay.

S. Kanagavel Manoharan,

K.K. Nagar.
