On the eve of his birthday and just weeks ahead of his retirement, the State government on Tuesday revoked the suspension of controversial IPS officer K. Ramachandra Rao (1993 batch) and reinstated him into service with immediate effect. He is set to retire from service on May 31.

Mr. Rao, who was serving as Director General of Police (DGP), Directorate of Civil Rights Enforcement, had been placed under suspension on January 19, 2026, pending disciplinary proceedings, following a set of videos that emerged on social media that purportedly showed him in compromising positions with multiple women in his office. The disciplinary proceedings were formally initiated on March 18, 2026.

Earlier in 2025, he was sent on mandatory leave after his stepdaughter, Ranya Rao, was allegedly caught smuggling gold at Kempegowda International Airport, and allegations surfaced that she had done so, misusing police protocol of Mr. Rao. He was cleared of those charges in an inquiry.

Following his reinstatement, Mr. Rao has been posted as Director General of Police (Police Manual) with immediate effect, until further orders. The DGP(Police Manual) is a newly created post. The government clarified that the post is equivalent in status and responsibilities to the cadre post of DGP, Criminal Investigation Department (CID).Transfers

Meanwhile, the State government, on Wednesday, ordered the transfers of three Inspector-General of Police (IGP) rank officers. Sandeep Patil, who was serving as IGP, Karnataka State Reserve Police (KSRP), has been transferred and posted as IGP, Northern Range, Belagavi. He replaces Chetan Singh Rathor, who has now been posted as IGP, Criminal Investigation Department (Economic Offences) in a vacant position. Meanwhile, Anupam Agrawal, who was awaiting posting, has been appointed as IGP, KSRP, a post vacated by Mr. Patil.
