Posters, flags, and cut-outs of several political parties have resurfaced across Chennai, particularly on barricades erected for Metro Rail construction.

On May 6, anti-corruption organisation Arappor Iyakkam urged the government to impose stricter restrictions on illegal banners placed on roads and pavements, after they flagged a banner of a Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) functionary in Royapuram occupying space on the road. “Instead of the usual diversionary tactic of asking which party is responsible, there must be a mechanism to prohibit the illegal placement of banners that endanger public safety on roads and footpaths, and impose stringent punishment on violators,” the organisation said in a statement.

On Thursday, banners were seen near the TVK Mylapore office in Alwarpet. The same day, flags, banners, and cut-outs were also spotted along the Velachery 100 Feet Road. Posters were found on the medians of Anna Salai, Metro Rail construction barricades and outside MRTS stations such as Chintadripet, Mandaveli, and Greenways Road.

Responding to complaints, Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) officials said necessary action was taken and the flags removed. Several zonal officials said election-related work had concluded only on Wednesday and that inspections would begin from Friday. Regarding permission for banners and flags, officials said applications were processed at the Corporation headquarters and would be reviewed on May 8.

Residents also demanded removal of other encroachments, including roadside shops and abandoned vehicles.
