Prices of petrol and diesel were increased by ₹2.7 to ₹2.8 per litre across the country and for all variants on Monday (May 25, 2026) – the fourth hike in 10 days. With the latest increase, fuel prices at the pump are up by about ₹7.5 per litre since May 15.

The price of petrol in Delhi breached the ₹100-mark – a level last scaled four years ago in May 2022 during the Russia-Ukraine conflict. Starting Monday, petrol in Delhi became expensive by ₹2.61 a litre, being sold at ₹102.12. Price of diesel increased ₹2.71 per litre to ₹95.20.
Highest in Kolkata, Mumbai
Price of petrol rose the highest in Kolkata while diesel was the most expensive in Mumbai. In Kolkata, petrol was dearer by ₹2.87 per litre, available for ₹113.51 at the pump. The price of diesel in Kolkata jumped by ₹2.80 per litre to ₹99.82.
The price of petrol in Mumbai rose ₹2.72 a litre to ₹111.21 while that of diesel increased by ₹2.81 to ₹97.83.

In Chennai, petrol price was up by ₹2.46 per litre to ₹107.77, while that of diesel jumped ₹2.57 per litre to ₹99.55.
OMC losses below ₹600 crore/day
Speaking to reporters at the bi-weekly inter-ministerial briefing about the situation in West Asia, Sujata Sharma, Joint Secretary at the Union Petroleum Ministry, said India’s oil-marketing companies (OMCs) incurred losses of “slightly less than ₹600 crore per day” from the sale of LPG, petrol and diesel combined following the latest hike.
The OMCs made a loss of ₹750 crore a day after the fuel prices were hiked by ₹3 per litre on May 15.
Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman informed that the government is estimated to take a revenue hit of more than ₹1 lakh crore in 2026 having reduced the Central excise duty on petrol and diesel by ₹10 per litre late-March to control retail prices.
India’s OMCs withheld the pressure of high crude oil prices in the backdrop of the conflict in West Asia for about three months before passing it on from May 15 onwards.
The first increase was around ₹3 per litre across the country. Thereafter, prices were hiked by around 90 paise twice.
Till Monday (May 25), India’s crude oil basket for the ongoing month averaged $107.84 per barrel. In the evening, benchmark brent crude futures (July) were trading 6.1% below the previous close at $97.23 per barrel amid reports of a peace deal between Iran and U.S. reversing prolonged stay at above $100 per barrel.
