Kerala’s government-produced brandy ‘Minnal Magic’ has run into controversy even before its launch following allegations of irregularities in the appointment of temporary workers at the Malabar Distilleries plant at Menonpara in Palakkad district’s Chittur block.

The brandy, introduced during the previous Left Democratic Front (LDF) government, was scheduled to hit Kerala State Beverages Corporation (Bevco) outlets by May 30.

However, production was stopped after the newly elected United Democratic Front (UDF) government took charge and initiated a review of the recruitment process involving 90 temporary women workers at the distillery.

‘Minnal Magic’ is the second liquor brand produced by the Kerala government after Jawan Rum. Introduced as an affordable brandy, it was priced at ₹400 for a half-litre bottle and was to be sold through Bevco outlets across the State. Officials had also considered introducing one-litre bottles depending on market demand.

‘Minnal Magic’ had generated interest among consumers ahead of its release. Bevco had planned an initial daily production of 9,000 cases, with a proposal to increase it to 13,000 cases in view of the expected demand.

The liquor is manufactured at the State-owned Malabar Distilleries unit at Menonpara using spirit procured from Rajasthan and water sourced from Malampuzha dam. An agreement was signed with the Kerala Water Authority (KWA) for supplying water. Officials said a rainwater harvesting project would be installed in the next phase.

Congress charges

The controversy erupted over the appointment of 90 temporary women workers through Kudumbashree units during the final days of the previous LDF government. Congress leaders alleged that the appointments favoured LDF supporters and accused the previous administration of nepotism and irregularities.

Officials said Kudumbashree units from seven grama panchayats under the Chittur block were considered for recruitment. Since most applicants reportedly quoted the same rate, the Kudumbashree Area Development Society (ADS) unit of Nallepilly was selected through a draw of lots.

Following the allegations, Bevco managing director M.R. Ajith Kumar has reportedly ordered a halt to production. Repeated attempts to contact Mr. Ajit Kumar for comments were unsuccessful.

‘Minnal Magic’ had earlier sparked controversy over its name as well. The brand was initially proposed to be named Malabar Mystery. However, the name was changed after a petition challenging the selection process was filed in the High Court.
