The role of youth is pivotal for the development of the country, said Superintendent of Police P. Jagadeesh, asserting that it is crucial for the youth to join the campaign to make India a drug-free nation.

The district police, the Department for the Welfare of Differently-Abled and Senior Citizens, and the Eagle Wing held a programme to mark the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking at the Arts College exhibition grounds on Friday (June 26, 2026).

DLSA Secretary and Judge Rajashekhar, District Revenue Officer Malola, and others participated in the event.

Addressing the gathering, Mr. Jagadeesh stated that a collective effort is being made through the ‘Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan’ (Drug-Free India Campaign) to bring about a positive change in all sections of society and to tackle the challenges of drug abuse and trafficking.

The SP urged the people to contribute to building a drug-free community and to protect today’s youth, who risk ruining their lives by falling prey to addiction. He advised students to set goals and reach great heights by maintaining discipline and good conduct, thereby fulfilling their parents’ aspirations.

He urged the public to report information regarding drug trafficking to the toll-free number 1972, assuring them that the identities of informants would be kept confidential. Mr. Jagadeesh said special surveillance measures are being implemented across the district to identify drug-trafficking gangs and take strict legal action against them.

Mr. Jagadeesh said that the government has established dedicated rehabilitation centres for drug users and is taking measures to ensure they have a better future.

Stating that drug abuse is a legal offense, Judge Rajashekhar urged youth to shun substance abuse and lead successful lives. He warned that strict legal action would be taken against anyone involved in the consumption, sale, possession, or trafficking of drugs.

Students from the Arts College performed a social play illustrating the harmful consequences of drug abuse and illicit trafficking. Later, an awareness rally was taken out in which students marched from the Arts College to Sapthagiri Circle raising slogans to create public awareness against drug use.
