A day written in divine mercy

The tenth of Muharram stands apart in the Islamic calendar. Ashura, derived from the Arabic ashara (ten), arrives as both a summons to remembrance and an invitation to gratitude. For Shias, it is a solemn period of mourning marked by processions and recitations of elegies. Some communities also observe rituals of self-flagellation. At the heart of it all is Hussein — Prophet Muhammad’s grandson and the third Shia Imam — killed in the Battle of Karbala on this day in 680 CE, according to established Islamic historical records. His refusal to yield to a tyrannical ruler and an outnumbered army stands as an enduring testament to the struggle against oppression and injustice.

In Sunni tradition, the day is marked by voluntary fasting — an observance that predates the tragedy at Karbala. Prophet Muhammad came upon Jews fasting in Madinah on the day to commemorate the deliverance of the Israelites from Pharaoh (referring to the parting of the Red Sea). He declares that Muslims had greater right to honour Prophet Musa (Moses) and prescribed the fast. Beyond this foundational event confirmed in Sahih al-Bukhari, several divine interventions are associated with Ashura in classical Islamic narrations. Prophet Yunus (Jonah) was freed from the belly of the whale on this day, illustrating the power of sincere repentance. Prophet Adam’s transgression was forgiven by Allah, marking the beginning of human redemption. Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham) was cast into a massive fire by King Nimrod, and Allah commanded the flames: ”O Fire! be thou cool, and (a means of) safety for Ibrahim!” — a miracle symbolising unwavering faith and divine protection. Prophet Ayyub (Job)’s affliction was cured after years of trial and tribulation — the ultimate reward for sabr (steadfast patience). Some narrations hold that the ark of Prophet Nuh (Noah) came to rest on Mount Judi, ending the Great Flood on this day. Ashura reminds the faithful of one constant: that no trial is final. Every Prophet tested was ultimately upheld — not just by their own strength, but by the mercy of the One who holds all things.
