Indiscriminate dumping of waste along the Thengamputhoor canal on Keela Vannanvilai-CTM Puram road, which falls under Nagercoil corporation, has irked the residents.

A narrow road flanked by an irrigation canal on one side and houses on other side is currently reeling under solid waste menace, where residents say they are waiting for a solution for weeks.

A resident, who wished to be anonymous, said that only a few people are were actively raising concerns against this waste menace, stating, “As waste piles up, it has become easier even for passers-by to dump their household garbage here.”

She added that for the past one month, door-to-door waste collection by conservancy workers has significantly reduced, leading to accumulation of waste over time “Although the waste is now being collected a few times a week, no step has been initiated to clear the existing piles,” she noted.

Murugesan, another commuter, highlighted that the canal carries water to tail end agriculture lands in the district. However, unaware of its importance, some people continue to dump waste into it. “As the canal is currently dry up and weed clearing works are underway, dumping into the canal has reduced, but now people are disposing of waste along the banks and opposite side of the road”

Speaking on the issue, Nagercoil Corporation in-charge Mayor Mary Princy Latha said steps would be taken to clear the accumulated waste from the area.
