Dubai Sports City, GMR Sports to set up Olympic sports training centre
By KV Kurmanath · 2025-12-06 · via Books News - Literary Insights and Reviews | The HinduBusinessLine

Dubai Sports City and GMR Sports Foundation will set up a state-of-the-art high-performance coaching centre at Bharat Future City, a brand new city that the Telangana government has proposed to build, to train Telangana youth to prepare for the 2036 Olympics.

The two organisations will sign a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Telangana government during the Telangana Rising 2047 Global Summit scheduled to be held on December 8 and 9.

“They will start preparing the master plan to build world-class infrastructure and training academies to offer training in 15 Olympic sports. The facility will come up in the Future City,” Jayesh Ranjan, Special Chief Secretary, Government of Telangana, told businessline on the sidelines of Sports Tech Podium 2025 at T-Hub on Saturday.

He said the State government was targeting to have representation in each of the 40-45 sports featured in Olympics. (India is pitching to host the prestigious sporting event in 2036.)

“However, while it takes time to build in the Future City, we will allow them access to our stadiums to start the programme. In about a month, we will see action on the ground,” he said.

Asked whether the government will provide any financial support to the two organisations to build the facility, he replied in the negative.

“They will be given some opportunity to develop commercial lines or streams of revenue, but we won’t give them any grant,” he said.

“Only about 10 per cent of India’s population plays sports passively, and just 0.01 per cent participates in serious competitive sports. Cricket continues to dominate as the country’s largest sport with an estimated 65.5 crore fan base. Even if just 10 per cent of passive players move into serious participation, the sports ecosystem will unlock a massive business opportunity,” Ratnakar Samavedam, CEO and Managing Partner of Hyderabad Angels, said.
