India’s return to British soil after 24 years ended in disappointment as it suffered a 0-2 defeat to Jamaica in the second semifinal of the Unity Cup 2026 at The Valley in London on Wednesday.

Goals from Courtney Clarke and Kaheim Dixon helped the Reggae Boyz, ranked 71st in the FIFA standings, secure a place in the final against Nigeria, which had beaten Zimbabwe 2-0 in the opening semifinal on Tuesday. India will now face Zimbabwe in the third-place playoff on May 30.

The match also marked a few important milestones for the Blue Tigers. Noufal PN and Ricky Shabong made their senior international debuts, while Edmund Lalrindika earned his first start for the national side.

India, however, struggled to settle early against Jamaica’s pace and intensity. The breakthrough arrived in the eighth minute following a swift counterattack that exposed the Indian defence. Gurpreet Singh Sandhu initially denied Jamaica from a tight angle, but India failed to clear the danger. Clarke pounced on a loose pass, shifted onto his right foot, and curled a stunning effort into the top-right corner beyond Sandhu’s reach.

India’s resistance faded after the second strike as Jamaica comfortably saw out the remainder of the contest to book its place in the final.

Jamaica continued to dominate proceedings, stretching India through the flanks and creating openings with ease. Dixon nearly doubled the lead in the 17th minute after bursting through on goal, but Sandhu produced an important save to keep India in the contest.

The Blue Tigers gradually found some rhythm as the first half progressed, enjoying spells of possession without threatening Jamaica goalkeeper Coniah Boyce-Clarke. Ryan Williams, Lallianzuala Chhangte, and Lalrindika found little space in the attacking third as India went into the break trailing by a goal.

India emerged with greater urgency after half-time and briefly threatened a comeback. In the 53rd minute, a defensive mix-up gifted Roshan Singh space to release Rahim Ali through on goal, but the striker had strayed offside before Chhangte converted the rebound.

The chance lifted India, which began pressing higher and asking more questions of the Jamaican defence. Yet just as the Blue Tigers looked capable of finding an equaliser, Dixon produced the decisive moment in the 78th minute. The Charlton Athletic winger dribbled past defenders near the edge of the box before firing a low shot through Akash Mishra’s legs and into the far corner to seal Jamaica’s victory.
