ENG-W vs IND-W: Kemp shines with bat and ball as England beats India by 26 runs to level series 1-1

England beat India by 26 runs to level the three-match women’s T20I series 1-1 at the Bristol Country Ground in Bristol on Saturday.

  • England beats India in second T20I

The final over had 5 runs and 2 wickets, and with that England levels the three-match series 1-1 with the decider to be played on Tuesday. England wins by 26 runs.

  • IND 142/9 (20)

Another wicket falls. Deepti Sharma 2 (4) c Knight b Bell

Another wicket falls as Deepti Sharma departs for 2 off 4. Bell takes pace off again on a surface that has rewarded slower deliveries all game. Deepti looks to swipe across the line, but gets a leading edge to Knight at short fine leg.

Sophie Ecclestone returns for the final over with England firmly in control and strikes straightaway, rattling the stumps to push India further out of the contest.

    Shreyanka Patil 6 (4) b Ecclestone
    Shree Charani 1 (1) run out (Capsey/Ecclestone)

  • IND 130/6 (19)

Two wickets in the over for Dean. Richa Ghosh falls for 8 off 7, looking to slog a flighted delivery over midwicket but failing to get enough on it. Gibson runs in from the deep and completes a sharp catch.

    Richa Ghosh 8 (7) c Gibson b Dean

    Harmanpreet Kaur 28 (22) c Jones b Dean 28

  • IND 122/4 (18)

Linsey Smith keeps it tight for the first three balls before Richa Ghosh takes her on. A fuller delivery outside off gives her the width, and she opens the face of the bat to carve it aerially over the off-side infield.

  • IND 114/4 (17)

Another quick wicket. Things aren’t working out for India. Jemimah Rodrigues falls to Lauren Bell, trying to clear the off-side infield but only miscues a length ball angling away around off to cover at the edge of the circle. Jemimah Rodrigues 1 (2) c Dean b Kemp

  • IND 109/3 (16)

Yastika Bhatia has been retired out for 33 off 36 after struggling to find fluency. Jemimah Rodrigues is the new batter in the middle and will take strike in the next over.

  • IND 109/2 (15)

Lauren Bell returns for her third over. Harmanpreet gets the much-needed release, standing tall and pulling the third ball over square leg for six. Bell then takes pace off to Yastika from around the wicket, beating her as she walks forward looking to play through the line. The final ball is another slower one, which Yastika drills to the right of mid-off, but Ecclestone cuts it off with a diving stop to keep it to one.

  • IND 98/2 (14)

Sophie Ecclestone comes into the attack and immediately applies the brakes. Yastika struggles to get her away, Just one from it as Ecclestone delivers a miserly over.

  • IND 97/2 (13)

Charlie Dean brings herself into the attack. The third ball is wide outside off, but Yastika stretches to reach it and finds short leg for no run. She gets a life next ball, mistiming a length delivery straight back to Dean, who crouches low but fails to hold on.

  • IND 95/2 (12)

Linsey Smith returns to the attack. Harmanpreet breaks the shackles with a boundary off the second ball, opening the face of the bat to a fuller delivery outside off and driving it through the covers. The next three deliveries yield singles as India keeps the scoreboard moving.

  • IND 88/2 (11)

Gibson comes on for the 11th over and starts with a dot ball. A wayward delivery down the leg side results in a wide before Yastika finds her rhythm, striking a boundary through the off side off the fourth ball. She finishes the over with another crisp boundary on the off side. India now needs 81 runs from 54 balls.

  • IND 78/2 (10)

Ecclestone with her second over. FOUR! Yastika makes space and cuts it through the gap on the off side for a boundary. Harmanpreet gets off the mark and retains strike.

  • IND 70/2 (9)

Freya Kemp with her first over. Dropped! Ecclestone dives forward to catch Yastika’s shot but fails to. Next ball, Smriti smacks a FOUR behind square.

And another one! Smriti makes space and sends it over the in-field for another FOUR!

OUT! Smriti goes for the big shot and ends up holing out to deep square leg! Kemp with the breakthrough!

    Smriti 32 (25) c Capsey b Kemp

  • ENG 60/1 (8)

Dean returns for her second over. Yastika trying to release the shackles with a big one but her shot gets deflected off her leg. Almost gets stumped too. Bowling to the field, just five singles from this over.

  • IND 55/1 (7)

Dani Gibson with her first over. FOUR! Yastika thumps it down the ground for a boundary!

  • IND 49/1 (6)

Smith with her second over. And Smriti smacks a FOUR through point with elan! Great comeback from Smith, just a couple of singles after that boundary.

  • IND 43/1 (5)

Sophie Ecclestone with her first over and Smriti sends it high! But no one to take the catch. FOUR! Smriti, this time, showing off her shot-making as a cover drive races to the ropes. One more FOUR! This time at the leg side.

  • IND 32/1 (4)

Charlie Dean hands herself the ball. After four dots and a single, Yastika dances down and guides the ball through the covers for a FOUR!

  • IND 27/1 (3)

Bell continues, Smriti on strike. Shorter ball to Shafali and the batter ducks her way out. FOUR! She swivels and sends the ball behind square, no fielder in the deep and it’s another boundary. FOUR! Shafali’s attempted shot meant to send the ball somewhere over at long off but an edge takes it behind, over short third, for another boundary.

Uncharacteristic there from Bell. Perhaps slipped from the hand as it goes way wide. GONE! A slower ball and Shafali tries to hack it but not enough power behind that shot. She holes out to extra cover and that’s the end of her knock.

    Shafali 22 (14) c Gibson b Bell

  • IND 17/0 (2)

Linsey Smith with her first over. FOUR! Smith with her angling ball and Shafali goes inside out for a boundary.

Rinse and repeat from Shafali there! Same shot and same result, another FOUR from the Indian batter’s blade.

Slightly straightish now as Shafali comes down the track and lifts it over mid off for another FOUR!

  • IND 5/0 (1)

Smriti Mandhana and Shafali Verma open for India. Lauren Bell to bowl. Last match, the pacer removed both openers. Smriti pulls behind square for a single. A beautiful straight drive from the Indian vice-captain but she finds the stumps at the other end.

Wide from Bell, a ball after Smriti almost found the gully fielder.

  • ENG 168/5 (20)

Arundhati to bowl out and close out the innings. Low full toss and it’s punished by Kemp, who sends it over long on for a massive SIX!

FOUR! Kemp finds the gap between fielders over at deep mid-wicket to continue a fine knock for the host.

Another low full toss and Kemp hacks it down the ground for another FOUR!

Cracking shot to end the innings! She stands and delivers as she sends the ball over mid wicket for another SIX! Great end to an innings and it’s a decent score to defend.

  • ENG 144/5 (19)

Nandni with her third over and she starts a wide. FOUR off Gibson’s bat as she sends the slower one racing through the off side.

A top edge hangs in the air for a bit off Gibson’s blade but mid off fielder is a bit away.

Nandni comes around the wicket to the left hander and a thick edge off of Kemp’s bat takes the ball to a FOUR!

FOUR! Shree Charani slips and fails to stop the ball in the deep to concede a boundary.

  • ENG 129/5 (18)

Shreyanka bowling out as well. OUT! Capsey tries for a reverse hit but Shreyanka keeps it to the stumps and fuller. Stumps cleaned up.

    Capsey 28 (25) b Shreyanka

Shreyanka is sure that she’s trapped new batter Dani Gibson lbw, and a review has been taken. And the stumps are missing. Gibson stays in.

  • ENG 123/4 (17)

Charani bowling out. OUT! Knight comes out to play the ball but she sends the ball straight back to Charani.

    Knight 18 (14) c&b Charani

Freya Kemp slashes it through the covers for a FOUR on her first ball!

  • ENG 115/3 (16)

Shreyanka returns with her third over. Slight confusion on that single but a better throw at the non-striker’s end would have troubled Knight. Then Deepti does well at extra cover to save three runs.

  • ENG 110/3 (15)

Nandni returns for her third over. The pacer has gone to her slower ball, a tactic which earned her two wickets in the last match. She gets some pace on the third ball and Knight slog sweeps it past short fine leg for a FOUR!

  • ENG 100/3 (14)

Deepti bowling out. And Capsey reverse-hits it through square for a FOUR! Another FOUR! This time, it’s Knight with a reverse-sweep through that gap on the off side.

  • ENG 88/3 (13)

Charani with her third and GONE! Jones tries to clear extra cover but sends the ball straight to the able hands of Harmanpreet.

    Jones 28 (22) c Harmanpreet b Charani

Heather Knight the new batter in the middle.

  • ENG 84/2 (12)

Deepti continues. Her third over. FOUR! A reverse-hit from Amy Jones as the ball races past short third.

  • ENG 75/2 (11)

Arundhati returns for her third over. The pacer making the ball move, mostly into the right-handed batters. Back-to-back deliveries now Capsey doesn’t connect the in-swingers. Just the singles from this one.

  • ENG 71/2 (10)

England slows down through the middle overs as Deepti Sharma returns for the 10th. Capsey drives the first ball through cover for four, but Deepti keeps the rest of the over tight.

  • ENG 62/2 (9)

Another wicket for India as Shree Charani removes Danni Wyatt-Hodge for 29 off 25, caught by Mandhana. Jones then goes for the sweep and gets a top edge over fine leg, picking up a couple. Six runs and a wicket come from the over.

    Danni Wyatt-Hodge 29 (25) c Mandhana b Shree Charani

  • ENG 56/1 (8)

Deepti Sharma comes into the attack and starts with a dot. Jones then sweeps the fourth ball for four, finding the gap past the diving fielder. Wyatt-Hodge follows it up with good running, pushing one towards mid-on and coming back for two. Nine runs come from the over.

  • ENG 47/1 (7)

Shreyanka Patil returns for her second over. The first two balls bring two quick singles before Wyatt-Hodge skips down the track and lifts the third over mid-off for four. Shreyanka then goes a touch full to Jones, who frees her arms and sends it over mid-off for another boundary. Twelve runs come from the over.

  • ENG 35/1 (6)

Shree Charani is introduced into the attack. Wyatt-Hodge uses her feet to the third ball and drives through the off side for four. New batter Amy Jones then gets off the mark with a single to the leg side off a full toss. Seven runs come from the over.

  • ENG 28/1 (5)

Dunkley looks to cut Nandani but only feathers an edge behind. There was a clear sound as the ball passed the bat. Ghosh standing up to the stumps, takes it cleanly as Nandani gives India the breakthrough. - Sophia Dunkley 10 (14) c Ghosh b NSS Sharma
Wyatt Hodge opens herself up and pushes the ball toward backward point for a boundary.
A dot ball to end that over. (7 runs and a wicket)

  • ENG 21/0 (4)

Shreyanka Patil comes in for the fourth over. Dunkley works the second ball to deep backward square leg for a quick single, before Wyatt guides the next to short third for two. The fourth delivery hangs in the air for a while but clears short fine leg, allowing Wyatt to pick up another couple.

  • ENG 14/0 (3)

Arundhati Reddy is with the third over. Smriti throws an overthrow and helps Wyatt pick another single. Third ball, and it is the first six of the match - Full and outside off from Nandani, and Dunkley lines it up before launching it cleanly over long-on for six.

  • ENG 6/0 (2)

Nandni Sharma, who shone with the ball in the first match, is handed the second over. Dunkley dropped! Nandani bowls it full and outside off, and Dunkley slices it towards backward point, where Rodrigues puts down a head-high chance.
Wyatt flicks the third ball to the off-side for a quick single.
Wyatt finished the over with another single towards backward point.

  • ENG 2/0 (1)

Arundhati Reddy with the new ball, starts strong it is a dot. Four successive dot balls. First runs on the board - A hint of swing for Reddy, but the ball slides down leg. Ghosh can’t hold on behind the stumps, allowing England to collect an extra run in addition to the wide. Dot ball to finish the over.
