The Election Commission of India on Saturday reversed its earlier order posting senior IPS officer Sandeep Mittal as Director-General of Police (Vigilance and Anti-Corruption), and instead appointed him as DGP (Armed Police), Tamil Nadu, with immediate effect.
On April 8, the poll body had transferred Mittal to head the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC). However, the decision was rolled back within days following objections raised by the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK).
The DMK had urged the Commission to review Mittal’s posting to the DVAC, alleging political bias. In its representation, the party flagged past social media activity by the officer, including a 2020 post in which he had stated that apart from the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, no other organisation appeared to be actively fighting the COVID-19 pandemic.
The ruling party also sought reconsideration of the transfer of Chief Secretary N. Muruganandam.
Separately, the Commission appointed K. Manivasan, a 1993-batch IAS officer, as Tamil Nadu Home Secretary.
