Led by continued demand momentum after GST rate cut last year and new launches, cars, two-wheelers and three-wheelers recorded double-digit wholesales (dispatches to dealers) growth in the domestic market in April, even though several automakers began the month with a price hike due to higher input costs

In the passenger vehicles (PVs) segment, except Maruti Suzuki India (MSIL), companies like Mahindra & Mahindra, Tata Motors, JSW MG Motor, and Kia India, etc. had announced price hikes of up to 3 per cent from April 1.

According to the monthly sales data shared by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) on Thursday, the PVs recorded their highest-ever sales of 4,37,312 units in April with a growth of 25.4 per cent year-on-year (y-o-y), over 3,48,847 units in April 2025.

“The first month of FY27, posted high double-digit growth in PVs, three-wheelers and two-wheelers. In April 2026, PVs recorded their highest-ever sales of 4.37 lakh units with a growth of 25.4 per cent over April 2025. Though there are concerns of high commodity prices emanating from the disruptions in West Asia, industry has been witnessing good demand,” said Rajesh Menon, Director General, SIAM.

Maruti’s record

Market leader MSIL had recorded its all-time high monthly sales since its inception to 1,87,704 units in April against 1,38,704 units in April 2025 – up 35.3 per cent. Its small car segment had also grown by 74.4 per cent y-o-y during the month.

Similarly, Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles recorded domestic wholesales of 59,000 units in April, up 30.5 per cent y-o-y against 45,199 units in April last year.

M&M also reported 8 per cent increase in its domestic wholesales to 56,331 units, against 52,330 units in the same month last year.

Hyundai Motor India (HMIL) also said it achieved the highest-ever monthly sales for any April with domestic wholesales of 51,902 units last month, a y-o-y growth of 17 per cent as compared with 44,374 units in April 2025.
