VICT sets sights on international cruise market, plans to...

The development of VICT is closely aligned with the objectives of the Cruise Bharat Mission, which aims to expand and strengthen India’s cruise tourism sector.

The development of VICT is closely aligned with the objectives of the Cruise Bharat Mission, which aims to expand and strengthen India’s cruise tourism sector.

After gaining traction in the domestic cruise circuit, the Visakhapatnam International Cruise Terminal (VICT) is now setting its sights on the global stage, with a renewed focus on international cruise traffic.

“Since its inauguration in September 2023, VICT is preparing to embark on a global voyage, with a primary focus on an itinerary-centric approach. We plan to actively promote this dedicated terminal to global cruise liners and passengers,” M. Angamuthu, Chairperson, Visakhapatnam Port Authority (VPA), told businessline on Thursday.

“We offer a robust cruise-centric ecosystem and infrastructure, supported by simplified procedures and sustainable, high-value experiences aimed at enhancing passenger traffic. Various Central and State government departments are also supporting initiatives under Cruise Bharat,” he said, adding, “We intend to double our passenger volume this year.”

The terminal is designed as a modern, passenger-centric facility with the capacity to handle up to 2,000 passengers per call, ensuring seamless and efficient cruise operations.

Steady growth

VICT has recorded steady growth in passenger traffic, handling around 10,000 passengers during FY 2025–26. “We are targeting to double this to 20,000,” the VPA chief said.

With full compliance to International Ship and Port Facility Security (ISPS) Code standards, the terminal has begun attracting interest from international cruise liners, particularly after handling its first international cruise vessel, MV The World, in April 2024.

“VICT has demonstrated exceptional operational efficiency, completing immigration clearance for passengers within 45 minutes of berthing — one of the fastest turnaround times recorded at any Indian port. This is a significant advantage for international cruise services,” Angamuthu said.

Multiple domestic and international voyages by Cordelia Cruises have been confirmed, including the first international cruise sailing from Visakhapatnam in July. Another international vessel, MV Odyssey, is scheduled to call at VICT in December this year, carrying approximately 900 passengers and 260 crew members.

“In addition, several more calls are planned during the current fiscal and FY27,” he added.

Alignment

The development of VICT is closely aligned with the objectives of the Cruise Bharat Mission, which aims to expand and strengthen India’s cruise tourism sector. The mission targets handling 2.5 million cruise passengers by 2029.

In line with this vision, India’s cruise tourism sector is projected to grow at an annual rate of around 15 per cent CAGR, reflecting strong long-term potential and positioning VICT to play a key role in the sector’s growth trajectory.
