Mumbai-based venture capital firm Cedar Hill Capital, which focuses on AI-first enterprise software startups focused on the financial services sector, is set to close its $20 million maiden fund within three months.

Sahil Anand, Founder and Managing Partner of Cedar Hill Capital, says the fund is backed by five institutional investors of strong standing and is likely to be oversubscribed beyond the base target.

Here he discusses the firm’s AI-focused investment strategy, portfolio expansion roadmap, and the opportunities in India’s fast-growing enterprise fintech ecosystem.

Edited excerpts:

What is the strength of your portfolio?

We currently have three companies in our portfolio: Cogniquest AI, a Bengaluru-based company that transforms document-heavy workflows into automated, insight-driven processes with advanced intelligent document processing and text analytics; WonderLend Hubs, which is in the incentive compensation management space for insurance players and sales channels; and Sign3, an AI-powered fraud prevention and customer intelligence platform to prevent money mule accounts. We are in the final stages of our fourth investment, which we will announce soon. We will deploy funds in at least four more investments this calendar year, and in 10-12 more companies over the next 24-36 months.

What is your investment thesis?

We are bullish on companies that focus on financial service technology embedded with AI. We look at enterprise fintechs married to AI in the BFSI (banking, financial services and insurance) industry. This is close to our heart because of the platform’s fintech lab, which has been home to 70-plus companies since 2017.

Do you favour early-stage funding or at growth and late-stage?

We are an early-stage fund, and typically invest in pre-Series A and sometimes Series A rounds.

What is the usual time horizon for your investment in a company?

As an early-stage investor, we typically look to hold a portfolio company for 5-7 years, post which we look to exit. We hope to play in the pre-Series A to Series C time horizon.

What is the average cheque size you deploy?

The average amount for the initial cheque is between $500,000 and $1 million.

Have you had any exits to date? Which kind of exit do you prefer?

Since we are only 2.5 years old as a fund, we have not had any exits yet, but we foresee that one of the important exit channels will be in the financial technology space.

There are many larger and medium-sized technology companies in this space that often go in for M&As with smaller, similar companies to fill a technology gap, which we see as a continuing trend.
