Enhanced passenger screening protocols have been rolled out at Chennai International Airport as a precautionary measure against Ebola-related health risks, with authorities installing automated thermal cameras and setting up a dedicated health desk for international arrivals.

According to airport sources, automated thermal cameras have been installed at International Terminal 2 (T2) to screen arriving international passengers for elevated body temperature. A health desk has also been established near the immigration area at the arrival level of T2 to monitor and assist passengers.

Airport authorities said no Ebola case has been reported so far.

Passengers arriving from or transiting through Ebola-affected countries and experiencing symptoms have been advised to report to the Airport Health Officer or the designated health desk before completing immigration formalities.

Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) is a severe and often fatal illness caused by the Ebola virus. The disease spreads through direct contact with bodily fluids of infected persons or contaminated surfaces and is not transmitted through air like influenza or Covid-19. Common symptoms include fever, fatigue, headache, muscle pain, vomiting, diarrhoea and, in severe cases, internal and external bleeding.

Health authorities globally typically intensify airport surveillance and thermal screening during outbreaks to quickly identify symptomatic travellers and prevent cross-border transmission.

Similar precautionary measures have also been initiated at other Airports Authority of India-run airports in southern India, with officials confirming that no Ebola cases have been detected so far.
