Global bytes. Maersk retrofits 200 ships to cut costs

Maersk retrofits partner ships to improve fuel efficiency and cargo-carrying capacity, and cut greenhouse gas emissions

In a largescale programme involving 50 shipowners, Danish shipping major AP Moller-Maersk is, in close collaboration with the owners, retrofitting around 200 vessels in its time-chartered fleet.

The main aim of the programme is to reduce the slot cost by improving fuel efficiency and cargo-carrying capacity, which would also help reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

In all, Maersk and its time-charter partners have executed more than 1,500 projects across 200 vessels, and an additional 1,000 projects are scheduled to be finalised by 2027.

The investment cost for these solutions is split between Maersk and the vessel owners, the company said.

Air cargo demand up 11.2% in February

Global air cargo demand, measured in cargo tonne-km (CTK), rose by 11.2 per cent in 2026 compared to February 2025 (+11.6 per cent for international operations). Capacity, measured in available cargo tonne-km (ACTK), increased by 8.5 per cent (+9.8 per cent for international operations), according to the International Air Transport Association (IATA).

“Even considering the boost February received from the movement of goods ahead of the Lunar New Year, the month showed strong growth,” said Willie Walsh, IATA’s Director General. The war in West Asia, however, makes it difficult to forecast the full-year performance, he added.

The Zone has also commissioned Automatic Block Signalling, which helps in increasing section capacity, for distance of 479 Route Kms against the target of 357 Rkms during the last financial year.

In the new energy space, the company sees significant untapped potential across the ecosystem, from installation to maintenance of renewable assets such as solar and wind projects.
