International Air Transport Association Director General Willie Walsh has voiced concerns over potential jet fuel shortages and cancellations in Europe by end -May. “The IEA’s (International Energy Agency) assessment of potential jet fuel shortages is sobering. We have also estimated that by the end of May we could start to see some cancellations in Europe for lack of jet fuel. This is already happening in parts of Asia. Along with doing everything possible to secure alternative supply lines, it’s important that authorities have well-communicated and well-coordinated plans in place, in case rationing becomes necessary, including for slot relief,” said Walsh.
A month of contrasts
Cathay Chief Customer and Commercial Officer Lavinia Lau said, “March was a month of contrasts. On the one hand, the ongoing situation in the Middle East shifted demand towards other aviation hubs and generated robust volumes on our flights. On the other hand, the price of jet fuel has increased significantly since the start of March and this is placing huge cost pressure on airlines around the world.” According to data published by the International Air Transport Association, the global average jet fuel price has increased to $197.83 per barrel for the week ending April 10 versus $99.4 for the week ending February 27, Cathay Pacific stated.
New rules to streamline ship registration
The International Maritime Organisation’s legal committee has approved a new set of guidelines to improve transparency and due diligence in ship registration, as well as prevent fraudulent registrations and misuse of flags. The guidelines help close a key regulatory gap for the maritime industry, given there is currently no binding international framework to regulate the registration of ships. The newly approved guidelines will assist new and existing flag State ship registries by providing practical measures to strengthen verification and due diligence, ensure accurate ownership records and improve oversight of registration procedures.
