Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a telephonic discussion with US President Donald Trump on the situation in West Asia, underlining the need to keep the Strait of Hormuz open and secure.
“Received a call from my friend President Donald Trump. We reviewed the substantial progress achieved in our bilateral cooperation in various sectors. We are committed to further strengthening our Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership in all areas. We also discussed the situation in West Asia and stressed the importance of keeping the Strait of Hormuz open and secure,” Modi posted on social media platform `X’ on Tuesday.
US Ambassador to India Sergio described the call as “very positive and productive” in a post highlighting Modi’s update on the interaction.
The Strait of Hormuz is a crucial waterway for India as it acts as the gateway for nearly half of its crude oil and 85 per cent of its Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) imports. Disruptions in the strait also affect India’s exports to the Gulf countries and to major markets such as the US and the EU, due to forced rerouting.
The call is important as the US military has initiated a blockade of all Iranian ports following the failure of talks between the two to stop the ongoing war. Since the war began in February, Iran has used drone strikes and mines to restrict shipping in the Strait of Hormuz. The US move is also to stop Iran from allowing neutral commercial vessels safe passage by allegedly charging a fee.
