Tata hands BigBasket reins to former Amazon executive Ami...

Tata Digital has appointed Amazon India executive Amit Nanda as chief executive officer of BigBasket, marking a significant leadership transition at the online grocery platform as it battles slowing growth, rising losses and intense competition in quick commerce.

The appointment effectively moves co-founder Hari Menon out of the CEO role he has held since founding the company in 2011. Menon will continue as a mentor and board member, according to the company.

The change comes as BigBasket undertakes a broader management reshuffle. In recent months, the Tata-owned company elevated Seshu Kumar Tirumala as chief operating officer and appointed Arpit Jaiswal as chief growth officer, moves aimed at strengthening execution as competition intensifies.

For Tata Digital, the leadership transition reflects the growing importance of quick commerce within its consumer Internet strategy. While BigBasket pioneered online grocery in India, rivals such as Blinkit, Zepto and Swiggy Instamart have emerged as dominant players in the fast-growing 10-minute delivery segment, forcing incumbents to invest heavily in expansion and customer acquisition.

BigBasket’s financial performance highlights the challenge. According to Tata Sons’ FY25 annual report, Innovative Retail Concepts, the company’s consumer-facing business, reported a 2.7% decline in operating revenue to ₹7,673 crore. Losses widened 46% year-on-year to ₹1,850 crore, underscoring the mounting costs of competing in quick commerce.

Nanda joins after an 11-year stint at Amazon India, where he led businesses across marketplace operations, product, technology and private brands. His experience in scaling large consumer businesses is expected to be central to BigBasket’s next phase of growth.

“His deep understanding of consumers, strong track record of building and scaling businesses, and extensive experience across e-commerce and consumer sectors make him uniquely positioned to lead BigBasket for its journey ahead,” Menon said in a statement.

The appointment signals Tata’s intent to bring sharper operational focus to a business that remains strategically important to the group’s digital ambitions, even as it seeks to close the gap with quick-commerce leaders and improve its path to profitability.
