The government has opened up the selection process to pick the chiefs of two of India’s important public sector enterprises that are at the forefront of its clean energy transition—SJVN and NTPC Green Energy. Both the PSUs are listed on BSE.

The Public Enterprise Selection Board (PESB) last week opened up the selection process for the chairman and managing director (CMD) of hydro power major SJVN and the managing director of NTPC Green Energy (NGEL) — the renewable energy arm of India’s largest power generator NTPC.

Top officials from the private sector can also apply to these two top posts.

The government headhunter on June 13 opened up the process of selection of the next CMD of SJVN, which is one of the four renewable energy implementing agencies (REIAs).

REIAs are responsible for aggregating the solar and wind power demand, conduct auctions and ink power purchase agreements with Discoms. Currently, NHPC CMD Bhupinder Gupta is holding the additional charge of SJVN CMD.

A Navtarna company, SJVN has over the years developed from a hydro power generator to fully diversified company in almost all fields of energy such as Solar, Wind, Thermal, Transmission and Power Trading with a pan-India presence along with operations in Nepal.

The present project portfolio of SJVN consists of 53 projects totalling 21,374 megawatt (MW) and five transmission lines totalling 391 km.

Fourteen projects totalling 4126.5 MW including part commissioning (660 MW) of 1,320 MW Buxar Thermal Power Plant and two transmission lines totalling 123 km are under operation. Another 18 projects totalling 4,129.5 MW and three transmission lines totaling 268 km are under construction.

“Private sector in company where the annual turnover is Rs 5,000 crore or more. Preference would be given to candidates from listed companies,” the advertisement on PSEB site said.

On June 11, PESB also advertised the post of managing director of NGEL, which has been vacant since February 2026.

As of March 1, 2026, NGEL Group stands at 9.2 GW installed & and operational capacity, around 14 GW is under construction and roughly 8 GW is under tendering projects. The operational portfolio comprises 8.4 GW solar and 0.8 GW wind capacity.

In FY26, the renewables arm of NTPC commissioned 3.3 GW capacity (as on March 1, 2026), reflecting its strong execution capabilities. It is also developing ultra mega renewable energy power parks (UMREPPs), including the flagship Khavda UMREPP (4.75 GW with 1.9 GW commissioned) in Gujarat and Barethi Solar Park (0.63 GW) in Madhya Pradesh.
