Eclipse hawkBit 1.0 released for open-source IoT software updates

News |

By Asma Adhimi

The first production-ready release of Eclipse hawkBit has arrived, marking a milestone for open-source infrastructure designed to manage over-the-air (OTA) software updates for IoT devices. Version 1.0 signals that the platform is stable enough for long-term deployments and enterprise-grade update systems.

The project has been in development for years and now reaches maturity after contributions from 84 developers, nearly 4,000 commits, and 20 previous releases. hawkBit has also achieved Mature project status within the Eclipse Foundation, the organization’s highest level of project maturity.

For eeNews Europe readers working with connected products and embedded systems, reliable OTA infrastructure is increasingly critical. The arrival of a mature open-source platform could reduce development effort for device fleets while supporting compliance and security requirements across multiple industries.

Built for scalable IoT device updates

Eclipse hawkBit is a domain-independent back-end framework designed to orchestrate software updates across large fleets of connected devices. It supports everything from resource-constrained edge hardware to gateway-based deployments in complex industrial networks.

The platform provides three integration APIs to support different update architectures. The Direct Device Integration (DDI) interface uses REST/HTTP polling for device connections, while the Device Management Federation (DMF) API relies on AMQP and RabbitMQ to support gateway-managed devices. A full management REST API enables orchestration, automation tools, and platform integrations.

Enterprise-grade operational features are built into the platform. These include multi-tenancy with isolated tenant environments, configurable rollout groups with success and error thresholds, and emergency shutdown capabilities during updates. Approval workflows and role-based access control are also included, enabling organizations to manage device updates within regulated operational environments.

Security has been designed as a core feature. hawkBit supports device-specific security tokens, gateway tokens for fleet management, mutual TLS certificate authentication, and OAuth 2.0 or OIDC identity integration. The framework also enables fine-grained entity-level access control to protect sensitive operations.

Deployment options are flexible. Organizations can run hawkBit as a monolithic service or split it into microservices, scaling horizontally using Spring Cloud. The platform can also be self-hosted, giving operators full control over their update infrastructure.

Growing ecosystem and industry adoption

hawkBit sits at the center of an expanding ecosystem of device clients and software integrations. Its HTTP/JSON-based API simplifies device integration, helping attract support across multiple embedded platforms and update frameworks.

Existing integrations include clients for embedded Linux update tools such as SWUpdate and RAUC, Rust-based client libraries, and device connectivity through platforms like Zephyr RTOS and ChirpStack LoRaWAN servers.

The platform’s maturity is further demonstrated by commercial deployments built on top of it. Products such as Bosch IoT Rollouts and Kynetics Update Factory already use hawkBit as their core update engine, showing that the framework can support large-scale production systems.

Beyond technical capabilities, the project may also help organizations meet evolving security regulations. hawkBit’s design supports compliance with frameworks such as ETSI EN 303 645 and European cybersecurity requirements under the Radio Equipment Directive.

With the 1.0 release now available, Eclipse hawkBit positions itself as a stable open-source foundation for managing software updates across the rapidly expanding IoT device landscape.
