IonQ and Florida LambdaRail roll out US quantum-safe network initiative

News |

By Asma Adhimi

Quantum networking is moving out of the lab and into real-world infrastructure in the US, as IonQ partners with Florida LambdaRail (FLR) to build a quantum-safe communications backbone across Florida. The initiative, unveiled this week in Miami, marks one of the most advanced efforts in the country to secure fiber networks against future quantum threats.

For eeNews Europe readers, the move highlights how quantum-secure networking is transitioning from pilot projects to scalable deployments, with implications for telecom infrastructure, cybersecurity, and public-sector networks worldwide.

Building a quantum corridor in Florida

The first phase of the project will create a nearly 100-mile “quantum corridor” linking Palm Beach County to Miami-Dade. The network will connect three research and education institutions using FLR’s existing fiber infrastructure, enhanced with quantum key distribution (QKD) technology from IonQ.

The agreement, announced at the eMerge Americas Conference + Expo, sets the foundation for a broader statewide rollout. By leveraging existing fiber assets, the partners aim to accelerate deployment beyond the experimental stage.

“Creating a statewide quantum network in Florida will mark another major milestone in the deployment of IonQ’s global quantum platform,” said Niccolo de Masi, Chairman and CEO of IonQ. “IonQ’s quantum-secure communications and advanced networking capabilities strengthen innovation ecosystems, improve resiliency, and lay the foundation for future public and private sector applications.”

The initiative also reflects growing concerns about quantum computing’s potential to break current encryption standards. QKD addresses this by using physics-based security, enabling detection of interception attempts and offering long-term data protection.

Defense and research implications

State officials see the project as strategically important, particularly for defense-linked institutions.

“I’m grateful for the LambdaRail team, IonQ, and partners at FAU, Quantum Coast Capital and more for accelerating this critical multistep process to provide quantum-level security for Florida’s postsecondary fiberoptics network — an investment with strong defense sector implications,” said J. Alex Kelly.

Florida’s universities maintain close ties with military bases and defense partners, making secure communications infrastructure a priority.

According to Jason Ball, the project will also help bridge the gap between research and deployment. “Florida LambdaRail’s collaboration with IonQ in this innovative quantum initiative will enable partner universities, researchers, and students to move quantum from the lab setting to real-world deployment,” he said.

Toward a broader quantum ecosystem

The effort is part of a wider push to establish Florida as a hub for quantum technologies. Matt Cimaglia noted the broader impact: “This effort reflects a broader shift in how infrastructure is being designed. By aligning networks, institutions, and investment, Florida is laying the groundwork for a quantum ecosystem that has the potential to drive innovation, attract talent, and support new opportunities across the state.”

Following the initial deployment, the network is expected to expand across FLR’s 1,500-mile footprint, subject to funding and stakeholder participation. For the wider industry, the project signals that quantum-safe networking is becoming a practical consideration for next-generation telecom infrastructure rather than a distant concept.
