Ukrainian cities, including Kyiv, came under Russian drone and missile attack early Monday, hours after Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump held a phone call.

Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said apartment buildings in several parts of the city were set ablaze and Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra, a historic former monastery in the capital’s center, was also hit. About 140,000 households were without power due to the “enemy attack,” Klitschko said on Telegram. 

Dnipro and Kryvyi Rih, two cities in central Ukraine, also came under attack in the strikes, according to local authorities.

The Russian and US presidents had a “friendly and frank” call on Trump’s 80th birthday on Sunday, the Kremlin said. Trump also spoke separately with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who said he had a “great conversation” with the US president.

US-brokered talks between Kyiv and Moscow on ending the war have been stalled with Trump focused on the conflict with Iran. 

Kremlin foreign policy aide Yuri Ushakov said Trump and Putin discussed international issues, the negotiations between the US and Iran and contacts between Washington and Moscow. They also addressed recent strikes against civilian targets in Russia, Ushakov said.

Ukraine’s latest attack targets included a Russian chemical plant in the Tula region and an oil storage facility in the Yaroslavl area, in what Kyiv has characterized as an ongoing effort deprive Russia of oil income and supplies. 

Zelenskyy, along with Trump, is expected to attend the Group of Seven summit in France that starts on Monday.  

“We agreed that we will discuss more during our meeting at the G7 summit,” Zelenskyy said. 

The White House didn’t offer a readout on either of Trump’s calls.
