The AI Era Needs a New SASE. Here’s What That Actually Looks Like. | Fortinet Blog

By the time a marketing label becomes widely adopted, it usually means the market has already moved on, and the laggards are still trying to catch up, both in terminology and architecture. The key question regarding unified SASE isn’t who claims convergence, but who has actually built it. 

This distinction is more critical than ever. Over the past several months, Fortinet has continued to expand its unified SASE platform with critical innovations in AI-driven security, autonomous operations, digital experience convergence, and flexible deployment—all while preserving its key architectural edge: seamless integration of networking and security within a unified operating system and management framework. This unity explains why the momentum of Fortinet Unified SASE is growing faster than others, who are still stitching their solutions together behind the scenes. 

The Market Has Noticed 

Fortinet was named a Leader in the 2025 Gartner® Magic Quadrant™ for SASE Platforms. It also received Customers’ Choice recognition for Security Service Edge for three years in a row, a recognition based on actual customer experiences across deployments, not just analyst opinions. And in 2026, Futurum awarded Fortinet its Elite status in the SASE Signal report, highlighting its ongoing success in integrating networking and security. 

Three straight years of customers voting with their reviews is a steady and impressive track record.  

The Integration Tax Nobody Talks About 

Here’s what the analyst reports don’t always say outright: most single-vendor SASE solutions aren’t truly architecturally integrated. They’re primarily assembled through procurement. So, while you may receive a single invoice, you still have to manage separate consoles, policy engines, and operational workflows. It’s still like having SSE from one provider and SD-WAN from another, only loosely stitched together through an acquisition. 

That leads to what some call the integration tax: the hidden operational cost of managing a platform that was assembled rather than built. Different policy languages. Inconsistent enforcement between on-net and off-net users. Analytics that don’t talk to each other. And when something breaks at 2 a.m., your team is triangulating across three dashboards to pinpoint where the problem lives. 

Fortinet is built differently. The unified FortiOS operating system runs on FortiGate devices at campuses and branch offices, on FortiSASE in the cloud, and on SASE Outpost locations. This means a firewall policy written for a branch FortiGate is applied the same way in a FortiSASE point of presence (POP), without the need for translation or concern about behavioral differences. The same policy model is used and enforced consistently across all locations. 

This isn’t just a marketing statement. It’s a proven architectural achievement developed over many years, which is why organizations select Fortinet not only for its features but also to avoid the endless effort of creating integration workflows. 

The industry has been discussing AI-driven security for three years. Most of that conversation has focused on AI for threat detection. However, Fortinet’s latest innovations expand this perspective: AI is now an attack surface, an operational accelerant, and a governance challenge all at once, and Fortinet Unified SASE tackles all three. 

  1. AI as an attack surface: Fortinet AI-aware security controls provide real-time visibility into the use of AI applications and services across the organization. Shadow AI is no longer just a concept. According to the 2025 Gartner CIO and IT Executive Survey, generative AI (GenAI) adoption is expected to reach 73% by 2026,* with much of this use remaining ungoverned. As a result, employees are pasting sensitive data into public AI models, and systems are calling external AI APIs without IT’s awareness. Fortinet provides the critical control plane needed to monitor, classify, and govern these activities, helping prevent breaches and compliance issues. 
  2. AI observability for agent-to-agent communication: Fortinet now provides telemetry on how and why AI agents communicate with one another. As agent-based AI workflows become more common in enterprises, the security model must go beyond just user-to-application interactions. It’s crucial to understand what your AI agents are doing, who they are communicating with, and what data they are processing.  
  3. GenAI security at the point of use: Employees using tools like ChatGPT and Copilot is table stakes. The real issue is what data they upload, including source code, customer information, financial data, and M&A documents. Sensitive information often leaves organizations via AI prompts, but most security systems can’t detect it because the traffic looks normal. Fortinet Unified SASE inspects GenAI traffic inline, detecting app use and submitted data. This lets security enforce policies, such as allowing or denying AI use, blocking file uploads that violate DLP policies, and flagging sensitive prompts, without disrupting legitimate activities. This shift from blunt AI blocking to effective GenAI governance enhances security. 
  4. Autonomous operations: FortiAI goes beyond simple chat assistance. Its ability to handle agentic workflows allows AI agents to independently perform alert triage, threat hunting, and investigations across the Fortinet Security Fabric—not just suggest actions for humans but carry them out. This capability is backed by over 15 years of AI development, and more than 500 AI patents issued or pending. This is not just a feature update. It’s a strategic advantage. 

The Hardware Advantage

Cloud-native vendors bet that commoditized compute would remove the need for purpose-built hardware. They were right about the cloud, but they were wrong about performance. 

Fortinet FortiASIC processors deliver 5–10 times the throughput of standard CPUs when inspecting encrypted traffic, which is exactly the traffic that dominates modern enterprise networks. About 60% of FortiOS features are enhanced with ASIC acceleration, about a $1 billion R&D investment, supported by a ~60% market share that improves unit economics. 

When an SSE vendor lacks SD-WAN, organizations must rely on a third-party branch solution, which means they’re paying the integration tax every single day. And when another SSE vendor offers an SSE solution with only limited SD-WAN features, it weakens their overall offering. 

For organizations that require consistent performance and enforcement across branches, the edge, data centers, and the cloud, the field of viable vendors narrows quickly. 

Sovereign SASE: A Differentiator That Matters to Half the Market 

Cloud-first SASE vendors have a fundamental limitation: Their architectures are built on the assumption that data can safely leave the enterprise environment and pass through their global POP network. For many organizations, that assumption does not meet evolving sovereignty, regulatory, or operational requirements. Fortinet addresses these needs with two flexible sovereignty options, FortiSASE Sovereign and SASE Outpost.

Fortinet’s SASE Outpost extends SASE enforcement directly into business-controlled locations: on-premises infrastructure, private data centers, and colocation facilities. You get local inspection, local enforcement, and sovereign data handling, all managed from the same centralized cloud console that runs your global Fortinet deployment. 

FortiSASE Sovereign is a sovereign deployment model that enables organizations to deliver full SASE capabilities through their own POP network, on infrastructure they control—on-premises, in private data centers, or in trusted colocation environments. 

Unlike shared cloud SASE services, FortiSASE Sovereign ensures that: 

  • Traffic inspection occurs entirely within sovereign or private environments 
  • Logs and telemetry remain within organization-defined jurisdictions 
  • Data is never processed in Fortinet-operated public SASE clouds 

This method ensures enforceable compliance with data sovereignty and privacy laws while maintaining the core advantages of SASE. A key benefit of FortiSASE Sovereign is its high degree of control and customization, putting the IT team in command. Unlike cloud-only vendors, which can provide more POPs, they cannot offer this level of control. 

One Size Doesn’t Fit Your Network

Cloud-only SASE sounds simple: install agents on all devices, route traffic via our POPs, and you’re done. However, real enterprise environments rarely align with such simplified methods. 

Your network is probably a mix of managed laptops, unmanaged contractor devices, branch offices that can’t justify full appliances, remote users who refuse agent installs, AI workloads with strict latency requirements, and applications across private/public clouds and on-premises data centers. Any SASE architecture that can’t accommodate all these elements isn’t truly unified. It’s just a partial solution in search of a perfect environment that may never exist. 

Fortinet Unified SASE addresses the complexities of real-world environments. It offers options such as full-agent deployments where appropriate, thin-edge setups for lightweight branch sites, agentless access for third-party and contractor users, and secure browser isolation for BYOD situations where endpoint installation is not possible. Organizations can also implement localized inspection policies that keep sensitive traffic on-premises or in colocation while directing other traffic via the global POP network for cloud-based security. 

That matters specifically for AI workloads. GenAI inference and data pipelines often require low-latency, high-throughput paths that don’t survive a round-trip to a distant POP. Localized inspection preserves performance without sacrificing governance.

The result is an architecture that adapts to your users’ locations, the devices they use, and data residency requirements, rather than forcing your organization to conform to the vendor’s deployment approach. 

Digital Experience Is a Security Metric Now 

The final point worth highlighting is the convergence of security and user experience—not as a nice-to-have but as an operational necessity. 

Performance degradation is often the first visible symptom of a security problem: a compromised endpoint dragging down network performance, a misconfigured policy adding latency to a critical SaaS app, or a DNS anomaly that appears as connectivity trouble before it is recognized as an attack. 

Fortinet’s integration of FortiMonitor into unified SASE provides comprehensive visibility from the endpoint to the network and the application, all within the same platform that manages policies. This eliminates the need for your operations team to toggle between a DEM tool and a security console, offering a single, unified view. 

When security and experience share the same data model, you don’t just fix problems faster. You also catch the security implications of user experience problems that might otherwise be overlooked as mere IT noise. 

The Bottom Line 

The SASE market is consolidating around platforms rather than individual point products. Organizations shouldn’t simply ask “Does this vendor offer SASE?” as nearly every vendor claims to, at least in theory. Instead, the real question is: “Who developed the architecture and who put it together?” 

The FortiOS integrated operating system runs seamlessly across branch offices, cloud environments, and sovereign regions. Purpose-built ASIC acceleration gives Fortinet a performance advantage that cloud-only architectures cannot easily replicate—one that would require over 10 years of hardware investment to match.
