Can’t-miss innovations from the bleeding edge of science and tech

Waymo’s fleet of autonomous taxis has garnered a reputation for causing mayhem on public streets, from trapping drivers in hours of hopeless gridlock to driving into oncoming traffic.

The fact that there isn’t any adult supervision in the form of a driver has led to plenty of debaucherous behavior, from incessant smoking and adult activities to posses of teens hanging out of the windows of moving Waymos.

But now, in a rare — and perhaps much-needed — win, a Waymo vehicle took matters into its own hands by delivering two 15-year-lds, who were drinking alcohol and shooting water beads known as Orbeez out of the moving car’s window, straight to the San Mateo police.

“Parents do you know where your teens are?” the department wrote in a tongue-in-cheek update on Facebook. “Waymo does!”

“After calling us and stopping the car, we were able to safely remove both subjects and determined they were shooting Orbeez from the car as they sipped on afternoon libations while being chauffeured around town in the driverless vehicle,” the police department wrote.

The teens caused quite a stir. An video show heavily armed police officers and even a K9 unit searching the Waymo vehicle. After all, even toy guns “pose real dangers, especially to an untrained eye,” per the update — an unfortunate reality for a country massively struggling with gun control.

“The simple handling of them can cause fear in passersby or to those who don’t get a good look,” the department wrote.

Looking on the bright side, at least the teens didn’t get behind the wheel while under the influence.

“Well, the Waymo might have been the smartest idea yet, because driving impaired would’ve made this so much worse,” the update reads.
