Who am I, and why am I here?
Hello everyone. Good evening, and thank you for listening to my speech.
Today’s topic is: Who am I, and why am I here?
First, let me introduce myself. My name is Bulu. I come from Fengjie, a small city in Chongqing Province. It is near the Yangtze River and has a magnificent view — Qutang Gorge, one of the Three Gorges. It is also the background image on the 10-yuan RMB banknote.
Besides the beautiful views, my hometown also has many famous poems and historical figures.
Li Bai said: “两岸猿声啼不住，轻舟已过万重山。”
“While monkeys’ calls still echo on both banks, my light boat has already passed ten thousand hills.”
Du Fu also wrote in his poem Climbing High: “无边落木萧萧下，不尽长江滚滚来。”
“The boundless forest sheds its leaves shower by shower; the endless river rolls its waves hour after hour.”
There is also the famous story of Liu Bei entrusting his son to Zhuge Liang in Baidi City, from Romance of the Three Kingdoms.
Perhaps you have already guessed which generation I belong to. Yes, I was born in the 1980s. Nowadays, children call us people from “the last century.”
It was an era without mobile phones or computers, and we only had black-and-white televisions. But we still had a lot of fun. We grew up and studied in this simple environment.
In 2004, I finished middle school and high school in my hometown, and then I came to Chengdu for university. In 2008, I graduated, and I had to find a job to make a living in this city.
Before I started working, I never imagined that I would work for a foreign company, or that English would become my working language. So, at that time, I did not prepare an English name for myself.
As you know, my Chinese name is Lu Bu. It was a name my father found in the Xinhua Dictionary. Its original meaning is the Chinese name for the Russian currency.
If I had been good at English, or passionate about it at that time, I might have named myself “Ruble.” But back then, I really could not bring myself to like English.
So I simply followed the foreign naming style and changed the order of my name. I called myself “Bu Lu”, which sounds similar to the color name “blue”.
Since then, I have been using English as a programmer for the past 18 years. However, I have not made much progress. I still struggle to speak a complete sentence fluently. I often misuse grammar and mispronounce words.
Even so, I keep trying to speak up and listen carefully. I am determined to overcome this weakness in my career and in my life. In the past, I always thought about improving my English, but I never took real action.
That is, until now, when I found this place — the English Explorer Club. When I came here for the first time, Nikke and Lisin were very kind and friendly, and they welcomed me warmly. E encouraged me to stand up and come onto this stage. I also had role-play practice with Lisin and Neo.
Especially during the fourth anniversary event, I worked as a volunteer with the organizers, including Lisin, Forgetco, and Jessica. Through this experience, I got to know many of you — interesting, talented, and outstanding friends.
For example:
There were many wonderful moments.
This experience refreshed my middle-aged spirit. On top of that, I joined the warm-up activities and played a game of Werewolf. Best of all, I enjoyed a delicious long-table dinner.
It was truly a day worth remembering, and a day I would like to keep in my memory forever.
For all these reasons, I am submitting this application to the organizers and members, and I sincerely hope to join this team.
