In the US, the Live at Budokan LP sold about 5 million copies in its first year, and the live version of this track was a massive hit single... Classic-rock radio is going to favor what is plastered into everyone's consciousness.

It was, and part of the story is that the original studio version was a flop when originally released but became a smash hit in Japan. So when the band played Budokan, all the Japanese fans knew it and sang along, and the energy of that live cut was amazing, a natural single.
