However, it's a greek group

Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 3:05pm
Paper Kosmonaut: In the end, it's all Greek to me... Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 3:06pm
Paper Kosmonaut: (that was a lie. i just wasn't paying enough attention to the language.) Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 3:06pm
Roman Angelos:

↳ Paper Kosmonaut @3:05

I will say, it's the one language where when I'm trying to learn how to read it, it just short circuits my fragile english-speaking brain Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 3:13pm
Paper Kosmonaut: I had Greek for aboiut four years between my 13th and 16th. But that was classic Greek. But the alphabet isn't that dissimilar from cyrillic, and that was something I learned myself when I was 8... I could read it, but I didn't know anything about the words I read.,   🎸 3:14pm
Jay Current:

↳ Roman Angelos @3:06

I took Ancient Greek in college for two semesters. I could read a little, but not enough to be fluent.   🎸 3:15pm

I can read the uppercase Greek letters bc I read Cyrillic, but it's the lower case that kills me Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 3:19pm
Roman Angelos:

↳ Jay Current @3:15

ah bummer, but thank you for coming by and saying hi. Didn't know we have so many Greek speakers here haha   🎸 3:20pm
Jay Current:

↳ Roman Angelos @3:19

Well, it's ancient Greek, so it wouldn't help much nowadays. My professor told me speaking ancient Greek to a modern speaker is like speaking Latin to an Italian. Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 3:21pm

Roman Angelos:

↳ Mr Fab @3:23

that's my address! Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 3:25pm
Paper Kosmonaut: I had latin and greek at grammar school - I guess that is what it's called in english. Latin in fact was really helpful understanding more about all latin-based languages like french, spanish and italian of course. Greek was interesting until they started the aorist verb forms. Then I was like come on, folks. keep it light.   🎸 3:26pm
Jay Current:

↳ Roman Angelos @3:21

Just a class on ancient Greek by itself to get a foreign language credit for my History degree. We did read a little classic literature and some Bible passages along the way though. Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 3:26pm
Roman Angelos:

↳ Paper Kosmonaut @3:25

woah, I had to look up what aeorist is. And I thought dative/genetive, etc was confusing Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 3:27pm
Paper Kosmonaut: I mean, Do you really have to be able to discern by lookming at the the verb whether someone is wearing yellow sock on his right foot on the attic of his mother's house? Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 3:27pm
Paper Kosmonaut: *looking Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 3:28pm
Roman Angelos:

I need to read more about this. I love the absolutely insane things that particular languages have Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 3:29pm

I have this record from the "Acme" supermarket (that supposedly features Chet Baker), and it's a complete Herb rip off. And the funny thing is they keep referring to Herb as "you-know-who" Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 3:32pm
Paper Kosmonaut:

↳ Paper Kosmonaut @3:29

But for a Dutch person, Finnish is quite easy to pronounce because it really is a what-you-see-is-how-you-pronounce-it. Kalsarikännit for example. The meaning of this word will amaze you. en.wikipedia.org... Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 3:32pm

it's like "featuring sounds similar to you-know-who" Avatar 3:32pm
Mr Fab: I'm a native English speaker and it still confuses me sometimes. Who vs whom? Affect vs effect? Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 3:32pm
Roman Angelos:

↳ Paper Kosmonaut @3:32

oh woah, Finnish was always up in my "I'll never understand" languages Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 3:34pm
Roman Angelos:

↳ Paper Kosmonaut @3:32

so it's the British version of pants Avatar 3:34pm
Mr Fab:

↳ Roman Angelos @3:32

Ha! There were so many Alpert rip-offs "The Mexicali Brass," etc.

Sadly, I believe Chet Baker did play on a couple of those. He wasn't doing too well towards the end.

I've heard something about reading Finnegans Wake in heaven. Or hell Avatar 3:38pm

Stephen Fry said his grandfather, who was Hungarian, often said "A Hungarian is someone who can enter a revolving door behind someone, and come out first." Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 3:40pm

I think Finnish is complex enough to get your tongue in a knot even when you are sober.   🎸 3:41pm

My teacher said when Aldi's debuted their coin-lock shopping carts in Hungary, Hungarians kept breaking the locks to get their coins out instead of just returning the carts. Avatar 3:41pm
Mr Fab: as I kid I thought it was so funny that Hungary, Turkey, and Greece were all near each other.

It bothered that I couldn't figure out the food connections to other Eastern European countries. Romania = Romaine lettuce...maybe..?

I believe Joyce said it took him 7 years to write Ulysses, so it should only take us 7 to understand it. I assume the same applies to the 14 years he spent on Finnigans Wake. Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 3:42pm

Jay Current:

I've only been listening around a year now, so I missed out on those. I did hear about a depressed DJ in, I believe, Washington state who played Grandma Got Ran Over By a Raindeer for over an hour before the station seized control from him. Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 3:54pm

when Obama was elected, kenny played Parliament's "Chocolate City" for the entire show. The playlist was thus:www.wfmu.org...

which i would much prefer to "Grandma Got Ran Over By a Raindeer."
