"Project Hail Mary" tugs out our heartstrings with the hopeful premise that extraterrestrial aliens will be intelligent, friendly, cooperative, genuinely great guys, rather than the far more likely scenario that they'd want to strip our planet of resources, exterminate and/or eat us, or -- arguably the relatively least bad of the scenario set -- throw us into cages as pets.
