On Wednesday, the New York Mets will host the Minnesota Twins at Citi Field for the second game of their series.

The Mets are coming off a 5-3 loss on Tuesday.

They will look to snap their 12-game losing streak.

ESPN’s Jeff Passan wrote (on Tuesday): “The Mets lost their 12th straight after blowing a three-run lead. They didn’t get a hit over the final five innings. At 7-16, they are tied for the worst record in MLB. There is ugly, and then there is this. Juan Soto is expected to return tomorrow. That’s a start at least.”

ESPN Star Makes Bold Statement About Mets Manager

There has been a lot of speculation about the future of manager Carlos Mendoza.

Some of the latest comments come from ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith (via First Take).

Smith: “12-game losing streak, can’t score on anybody… They have been awful, and you have the second largest payroll in all of baseball… He must go… You are clearly trending in the wrong direction… Whatever kind of pulse this team has had, he clearly cannot find it… You clearly need a new voice, because that voice ain’t working.”

Smith is far from the only person calling for Mendoza’s just, and his comments are fair based on the way the team has performed to start the 2026 season.

Bob Nightengale of USA Today wrote: “Managers who have lost 12 or more consecutive games since the start of 2020: Brandon Hyde, Orioles: 2021 Torey Lovullo, Diamondbacks: 2021 David Ross, Cubs: 2021 Chris Woodward, Rangers: 2021 Joe Maddon, Cubs: 2022 Pedro Grifol, White Sox: 2024 Carlos Mendoza, Mets: 2026″

Mets And Mendoza

The Mets are at the bottom of the National League East with a 7-16 record in 23 games.

They have won just three out of ten games at Citi Field.

Following two more games against the Twins, the Mets will remain at home to host the Colorado Rockies.

Jon Heyman of The New York Post wrote: “Mets are last (30th) in on base percentage (.285), slugging (.332) and OPS (.617)”

Mendoza is in his third season as the manger of the Mets.

He made the MLB playoffs in his first season with the team, but they are coming off a year where they missed the postseason (on the last day of the regular season).

Over 347 games, Mendoza has gone 179-168.

His future will be among the hottest topics in the entire MLB.
