Rory McIlroy is speaking out about Brooks Koepka’s return to the PGA Tour, reportedly calling the move “insane” as new details continue to emerge about what it cost Koepka to come back.

McIlroy’s reaction was shared during an appearance on the “Foreplay Podcast,” where Frankie Borrelli recounted a conversation he reportedly had with the 2-time Masters champion about Koepka’s return. According to Borrelli, McIlroy described the decision in blunt terms.

“It’s so much to give up and jump back,” McIlroy said, calling the move “insane” and adding that he would not have made the same choice.

Koepka returned to the PGA Tour in January 2026 after leaving LIV Golf, agreeing to a series of conditions under the Tour’s Returning Member Program. The terms included giving up five years of player equity shares, being excluded from the $100 million FedEx Cup bonus program for the 2026 season, and committing to a $5 million charitable donation.

Koepka accepted the terms and returned to competition at the Farmers Insurance Open. Despite his strong wording, McIlroy made it clear his reaction came from respect for Koepka’s competitive drive.

“He obviously is a very competitive person and wants to compete at the highest level,” McIlroy said following a TGL match that same week.

McIlroy has spoken highly of Koepka in the past, calling him a “phenomenal player” and one of the most exciting golfers to watch when he’s playing well. The two have been linked for years through competition, including the 2019 Tour Championship, where McIlroy finished ahead and Koepka publicly praised him afterward.

McIlroy’s stance on LIV Golf has also changed over time. He was initially one of its most outspoken critics and said the format was “not for me.” More recently, he has acknowledged he may have been “overly judgmental” and has supported players returning to the PGA Tour.

McIlroy also discussed his recent success during an appearance on the “New Heights” podcast, hosted by Travis Kelce and Jason Kelce. The conversation included a light moment when McIlroy confirmed he could hear Travis cheering during the Masters.

“I heard you,” McIlroy said after Kelce told him, “I was (expletive) screaming it: Back to back, baby, let’s go, let’s go.”

McIlroy entered the final round of the 2026 Masters with a six-stroke lead and secured his second consecutive green jacket, finishing two strokes ahead of Scottie Scheffler. The win marked his sixth career major title.

Following the victory, McIlroy said he took time to celebrate before returning to his routine.

“I spent a solid 10 days of celebrating and enjoying it,” McIlroy said. “But I’ve been practicing for the last 10 days and, you know, there’s still a lot of golf left this season.”

He added that he wanted to avoid the drop in focus he experienced after his previous major win.

“I felt after last year … I sort of went through that lull I think all athletes go through where it’s like OK I’ve achieved the dream,” he said. “So I just didn’t want to fall back into that again this year.”

McIlroy also reflected on how this year’s Masters compared to his first.

“I don’t think anything will ever touch last year’s,” he said. “I don’t think anything will top just the euphoria of it all.”
