Shockwaves were sent across Major League Baseball on Saturday afternoon when the Red Sox decided to cut ties with manager Alex Cora. Who is truly to blame when an All-Star caliber team with several players getting paid very handsomely can’t win?

The Philadelphia Phillies may have the blueprint for firing their manager, Rob Thomson, after the Alex Cora news. After their 6-2 loss to the Atlanta Braves on Sunday, the Phillies are now 9-19 and hold the worst record in the National League. Much like their division foe, the New York Mets, Philadelphia’s start to the season has been absolutely dreadful, and wholesale changes might be needed soon.

Phillies Predicted to Make Managerial Change Soon

After the Alex Cora firing, everyone in MLB is wondering who’s next on the chopping block of the managerial carousel.

Firings are usually pretty rare this early in the MLB season, but considering the Phillies entered this season with World Series aspirations, they are silencing that possibilty pretty quickly.

Per FanSided’s Christopher Kline, the Phillies could be the next team to make a managerial change:

“Thomson can only do so much with the hand he was dealt, but keeping Trea Turner in the leadoff spot over Schwarber has already cost the Phillies in multiple clutch late-inning situations. He can’t figure out the cleanup spot (could anybody?). He’s an easy scapegoat, but the Phillies probably benefit from a fresh perspective in the clubhouse at this point. The vibes are horrid. Dave Dombrowski also has a longstanding relationship with Alex Cora, so the line of succession could not be more obvious.”

Again, much like the Mets situation, how much can you really blame Thomson? Philadelphia has some of baseball’s biggest stars, and they simply just aren’t producing. In the last week, the Phillies have lost five of six to the Braves, who are now controlling the division.

What Should the Phillies Do with Rob Thomson?

The Phillies recently welcomed the return of Zack Wheeler to the rotation, which finally ended the team’s 10-game losing skid, but this offense looks dead more often than not, and that should ultimately fall on the manager.

Some of the Phillies ‘ All-Star-level players include: Trea Turner, Bryce Harper, Kyle Schwarber, Alec Bohm, Chris Sanchez, Wheeler, and Jesus Luzardo.

While Rob Thomson’s job may be a little more secure than, let’s say, Carlos Mendoza, it’s fair to note that Thomson got his position after a mid-season managerial firing a few years ago.
