Kyler Murray Sparks Strong Feedback Ahead of Vikings QB C...

Kyler Murray could be exactly what the Minnesota Vikings need.

The Minnesota Vikings are preparing for a QB battle this offseason, but the clear-cut frontrunner in the court of public opinion is Kyler Murray, a former No. 1 overall pick of the Arizona Cardinals with two Pro Bowls on his resume.

That is one more than former Vikings QB Kirk Cousins had upon his arrival in 2018, and two more than Sam Darnold in 2025.

Naturally, Murray’s arrival figures to have a significant impact on the Vikings in 2026.

Kyler Murray Fuels 1-Word Vikings Take

Murray was the impetus for “quarterback” defending the Vikings’ offseason, with CBS Sports’ Jeremy Pereles listing him as the “player who exemplifies” that reality.

“No team needed — and got — as immediate a quarterback upgrade as the Vikings. Murray is an enigmatic, sometimes-frustrating and oft-injured player. But he’s also a major talent, and he’s joining Kevin O’Connell, who has gotten the very best out of lesser talents,” Pereles wrote in an article on May 13.

“Despite getting some of the worst quarterback play in the league last year (32nd in TD-Int ratio, 31st in sack rate), the Vikings finished 9-8. Brian Flores’ defenses are consistently among the better groups in the NFL. But a team can only go so far without starting-caliber quarterback play. Last year, that would have been enough for Minnesota to make the playoffs. Even in his worst years, Murray has been just that. At his best, he has been much, much more than that — a Pro Bowler and fringe top-10 player at the position.”

Pereles added that Murray’s “rushing abilities add a dynamic that O’Connell hasn’t had before and could be a crucial addition. Justin Jefferson, Jordan Addison and recently acquired Jauan Jennings form an excellent receiver trio.”

Murray has rushed for more than 400 yards in five of his seven NFL seasons.

He has crossed that threshold in every campaign in which he made double-digit appearances in his career.

Kyler Murray, Jauan Jennings Will Face Familiar Foe With Vikings

The 2026 season holds a special opportunity for Murray and Jennings, in particular. Both are landing in an offense with the Vikings that should play to their strengths.

It goes beyond that, though.

It will be a familiar matchup for Murray, who spent the first seven years of his career facing the 49ers twice a season with the Cardinals. He had 1,914 yards, 13 touchdowns, and 5 interceptions on 66.9% completion in those games.

Murray–the Vikings’ presumed QB1, at least to start what is expected to be an open competition with 2024 first-round draft pick J.J. McCarthy–is 4-5 against the 49ers in his career.

Jennings spent the first five seasons of his career with the 49ers before joining Minnesota.

Vikings running back Jordan Mason also began his career with the 49ers, where he was a teammate of Jennings’ before San Francisco sent him to Minnesota in a trade during the 2024 offseason.

Similar to Murray, his 2019 draft classmate and former Cardinals teammate, Vikings cornerback Byron Murphy, also faced the 49ers twice a year for four seasons.

The game figures to be rife with compelling storylines.
