L3Harris Technologies has successfully delivered the first VC-25B aircraft to the U.S. Air Force.

The step marks a major milestone in the modernization of America’s presidential airlift fleet.

The delivery underscores the company’s ability to rapidly transform a commercial aircraft into a highly specialized government platform while ensuring continuity of presidential transportation operations.

The newly delivered aircraft is a modified Boeing 747-8 that has undergone extensive upgrades to meet the unique requirements of the U.S. government. L3Harris completed the transformation in an accelerated timeframe, converting the aircraft into what is known as the VC-25B “Bridge” aircraft. The program was designed to provide an interim solution while the next-generation Air Force One fleet continues to face delays.

“Through a trusted, fast-tracked partnership with the Air Force, we have proven that the U.S. defense industrial base can move at maximum velocity when the mission demands it,” said Christopher Kubasik, chairman and CEO, L3Harris. “L3Harris rose to the challenge, and we are deeply honored to deliver to the Commander-in-Chief a symbol of American strength that meets the nation’s highest standards without compromise.” 

According to company and Air Force officials, the aircraft completed modification work, flight testing, and certification activities before delivery. The platform incorporates enhanced communications systems, security features, and mission-specific capabilities required for executive transport operations. The aircraft is expected to support the Presidential Airlift Group and help maintain uninterrupted operational readiness as the aging VC-25A fleet undergoes maintenance and awaits replacement.

Primary VC-25B program has experienced significant schedule delays

The delivery comes at a critical time for the U.S. Air Force. The primary VC-25B program, managed by Boeing, has experienced significant schedule delays, pushing the expected arrival of the fully developed next-generation Air Force One aircraft into 2028. As a result, the bridge aircraft provides an important capability gap-filler, ensuring that presidential transport requirements can continue to be met without disruption.

L3Harris leveraged its extensive experience in aircraft modernization and special-mission platform integration to execute the project. The company conducted round-the-clock operations to accelerate delivery, demonstrating its capacity to support high-priority national security programs under demanding timelines.

Defense analysts view the delivery as a significant achievement for both the Air Force and industry, highlighting how commercial aircraft can be rapidly adapted to fulfil specialized government missions. The successful completion of the project also reflects ongoing efforts by the Department of Defense to modernize critical executive transport capabilities while managing delays in larger acquisition programs.

As the aircraft enters service, it will play a vital role in supporting presidential travel and continuity-of-government missions until the full VC-25B fleet is operational. The milestone further strengthens L3Harris’ position as a leading provider of advanced aircraft modification and mission-integration solutions for U.S. defense and government customers.
