Hayao Miyazaki’s iconic Studio Ghibli movie Kiki’s Delivery Service is being remade into a live action series by BBC Studios.

BBC Studios Kids & Family has tied with Wheel In Motion and Japan’s Kadokawa Corporation on the 10 x 30-minute series, the first time Kiki’s Delivery Service, which is based on the Eiko Kadono books, has been made for live action small screen.

Currently in development, Kiki’s Delivery Service brings to life the extraordinary journey of its titular character, a 13-year-old witch who has led a sheltered life until she leaves home to find her place in the world, moving to the port town of Koriko and starting a delivery service. Along the way, her optimism and kindness help her forge unlikely friendships.

Kiki’s Delivery Service is one of the most popular Miyazaki movies, grossing big numbers, receiving critical acclaim and multiple awards.

The TV adaptation will be written by Irena Brignull, a screenwriter and novelist whose credits include the Oscar‑nominated The Boxtrolls, Sky’s Skellig and Netflix’s The Little Prince.
