US President Donald Trump has said he remains hopeful that a peace agreement with Iran can be reached, as diplomatic talks continue amid fears of renewed conflict in the Middle East.
Speaking to reporters, the US president said Washington and Tehran were “right on the borderline” between reaching a deal and returning to war.
“If we don’t get the right answer, it could happen very quickly. We have to get the right answer. It will have to be 100 percent good answers,” Trump said.
He added that the United States would allow a few more days for negotiations to continue before deciding anything ahead.
“Hopefully, those people will make a deal that will be great for everybody, but I don’t know … If I can save people from getting killed by waiting a couple of days, I think it is a great thing to do,” he said.
Trump’s comments come after several days of heightened tensions between the two countries, alongside growing international pressure to avoid a wider regional conflict.
