Dual-Controller Storage Adds Complexity, Creates Sprawl, and Increases Costs for Enterprise Deployments

Remember when storage was simple? By “simple,” I mean too basic and outdated for today’s enterprise workload requirements. Time changes everything, especially in technology, and not all that was standard 20 years ago still holds true today. Flash storage, faster protocols, and architectures changed the landscape, but some things remained the same. Because controllers have more powerful processors and backplanes, they inherently improve on their ability to go faster (to a point), but if the overall architecture remains the same, the overall performance, availability, and longer-term benefits are never realized! If I put a bigger engine in a car, yes, it will go faster, but if I don’t match up the drivetrain, I will limit the overall benefit I gain from that. So, I have to think about the drivetrain, the suspension, the wheels and tires, and so many other things to really achieve its fullest capabilities.

ALUA based

The go-to architecture for most storage systems, for decades, has relied on a pair of controllers, known as the ALUA-based dual-controller architecture (Asymmetrical Logical Unit Access).

It still prevails in most storage products deployed today. You see variations of it everywhere, with frequent claims that it is “Enterprise” storage, often published and pushed by companies that should know better, when it is far from “Enterprise” storage. While these dual-controller products were built with good intentions, for their time in an effort to provide high availability and failover, they are fundamentally outdated designs that just can't meet the technical and business needs of enterprise customers. With today's performance, scalability, cyber resilience, and operational demands for today’s modern, diverse workloads, these antiquated dual-controller products fall way short of what enterprises need to run their businesses. At their core, the problem is simple: you're trying to run everything through just two controllers, but just one active controller! This critical limitation creates hard ceilings on both performance and scalability. These architectures fall under the Six 9s (99.9999%) of availability, with some vendors telling customers, stretching that claim that they can deliver seven 9’s availability.

The performance ceiling is defined by a combination of the compute, cache, and interconnect bandwidth between the controllers. These architectures face unpredictable latency, even in true active/active configurations (remember, most are active/passive), which can lead to performance 'thrashing' and reduced throughput. When hitting these ceilings, you add more systems, inevitably creating array sprawl as storage analysts refer to it, thus, creating performance and capacity silos and sky-high upkeep costs. You're stuck rebalancing your storage estate and segregating applications, ending up back at square one with wasted resources. This is a costly mistake that drives up CAPEX, OPEX, IT resource management, and data center space, power, and cooling!

Many of these vendors have built platform-centric management planes that try to mask the underlying problem they create. They attempt to make the multiple products appear as one logical pool of storage, using replication and data mobility between products with the false promise of delivering lower OPEX. In the end, these disparate products are still well behind the curtain (remember Oz?) with the same challenges.

Think of this consolidation like urban planning: instead of managing a sprawling, congested suburb that requires vast resources to maintain and navigate (product sprawl), Infinidat constructs a high-efficiency skyscraper that houses the same population in a fraction of the land (data center) area, keeping critical resources centralized and immediately accessible. Infinidat solutions are designed to absorb and support critical workloads, with impressive system consolidation ratios of up to 5:1 and more! Infinidat also stands behind the performance of the consolidated solution with a performance guarantee, and 100% availability!

Why Infinidat Architecture Matters

AAA based

Infinidat has engineered a next generation triple-redundant enterprise storage architecture that leaves traditional dual-controller products in the dust by delivering the ultimate in performance and availability. This robust architecture is specifically tailored to the rigorous demands of a customer base that is focused within the Fortune 2000, with 26% of the Fortune 50 already relying on Infinidat to handle the most demanding and critical workloads in the world. While other large-scale multi-controller products often fail to justify their exorbitant costs with actual results, Infinidat’s design delivers powerful technical and business value well beyond the other products in market. Infinidat ensures high-performance where others fall short. By the way, we are always replacing other multi-controller products because they rarely live up to the promise of what they should provide. In one Fortune 500 customer we replaced 38 purpose built backup appliances with 14 InfiniBox® hybrid arrays, dramatically shrinking the backup window, while improving the recovery times by >25%.

We unlock the full potential of your enterprise data infrastructure with an architecture that unifies performance at scale, availability, and ultra-low latency. At the core, our Neural Cache multi-patented software, a learning algorithm that bypasses traditional limits by placing hot data in DRAM (which is 1,000 times faster than flash,) enables the Infinidat platforms to optimize data placement over time and deliver "All-DRAM" caliber performance. This powerful cache technology works in tandem with the Trie, a patented metadata structure, held entirely in DRAM, that guarantees consistent performance from the first byte to multiple petabytes while managing multiple layers of data protection. Our customers consistently experience >95% DRAM cache hit rates, unheard of in our industry, but we see it all the time. By keeping all metadata and write flows in high-speed memory, this architecture achieves latencies as low as 35 microseconds and sustains massive write bursts. Finally, our InfiniRAID® anchors this reliability as a de-clustered, software-defined RAID that distributes data across thousands of virtual groups to prevent hot spots and enable automatic self-healing. By separating data layout from the physical layer, InfiniRAID ensures that recovery and data protection never compromise the system’s high-speed performance. That’s just a teaser of the performance and availability benefits of the Infinidat solution, which we could go much deeper into in a future blog.

Beyond raw speed, workload consolidation is a defining core specialty of the Infinidat platform, effectively solving the problem of system sprawl rather than just managing it through federation. Real-world use cases highlight the power of this efficiency; for instance, a Fortune 500 financial services company was able to consolidate 288 floor tiles of competitive enterprise storage down to just 61 floor tiles of InfiniBox systems, enabling 10’s of millions of dollars in CAPEX and OPEX savings over 3-year period. This capability enables enterprises to drastically reduce their physical footprint and complexity, proving that you don't need sprawling products to try to achieve enterprise results. Think about those cost savings, power efficiency for your data center, and reduction in carbon footprint!
