Gaol roof locked in

Morgan Sindall has completed core structural work as part of a major renovation and redevelopment at Haverfordwest Castle in Pembrokeshire, Wales. The scheme includes a renovation of the Grade II-listed gaol building, which sits within the walls.

The gaol’s roof has been fully replaced, and major works have been undertaken to stabilise the building’s core structure. The next phase will include transforming the gaol into a visitor attraction with a new café, a shop and a 500-seat outdoor events space.

Wall comes to life

A new living wall has been installed at the site of the former Royal Liverpool Hospital. The wall will surround a new garden in the city.

The 33m vertical meadow, installed by BAM UK & Ireland, is a collaboration with the Eden Project and is due to be completed in 2027.

Mace’s City Hall return

The firm is managing the £150m transformation of the former Greater London Authority headquarters at More London into a modern, sustainable office and retail scheme for Kuwaiti-owned real estate investor St Martins Property Investments.

Mace delivered the More London development in July 2002.

Bridging the Calder

Beams were installed in late July by contractor Severfield to connect a bridge across the River Calder for the Baker Viaduct in Ravensthorpe, Northamptonshire.

Severfield is working with BAM Nuttall on the scheme, which is part of the Transpennine Route Upgrade (TRU), a multi-billion-pound railway programme across the north.

Stirling shortlist revealed

The shortlist for this year’s Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) Stirling Prize included this housing scheme in Croydon designed by Mary Duggan Architects with RUFF Architects. The project was built by CField.

Other projects in the running for the UK’s highest accolade in architecture include two schemes for separate colleges at Cambridge University, a new piazza and mixed-use scheme next to Paddington train station, and an arts centre in Hertfordshire.

Sisk wins Irish Centre scheme

Sisk has been appointed to redevelop the London Irish Centre in Camden, north London. Work is due to start on the £38m project, designed by Coffey Architects, in January 2027, with completion set for early 2029.

The centre first opened in 1955 to provide support, accommodation and employment for newly arrived Irish immigrants in the capital and continues to offer welfare as well as being a cultural hub.
