Setting the Stage
In the last 12 months, ransomware attacks increased 25% year-over-year, 42 countries experienced their first attack, and the number of active groups exceeded 60 for the first time.
Behind the numbers, real people suffered. In June 2024, an attack on a blood test provider harmed 170 patients and caused one of the first deaths officially linked to ransomware. Elsewhere, ransomware caused huge financial losses, disruption at hospitals, school closures, and even shutdowns at steel works.
Despite that, there are reasons for optimism. Changes in criminal tactics in the last year indicate that ransomware is struggling in environments protected by managed detection and response (MDR).
