A sensational incident late night on May 30 has triggered tension in Assam’s Nalbari district after a young man was killed and a teenage girl critically injured in an alleged attack at Gangapur under Mukalmua.

The victims, identified as Madhurjya Barman (19) of Balipathar in Chamata and Mridumudra Deka (18) of Gangapur, were reportedly travelling on a scooter when they were allegedly attacked by two individuals, identified as Roz Ali and Ashik Ali.

Madhurjya Barman succumbed to his injuries at the scene. He was serving as the Assistant General Secretary of the West Nalbari Regional Students Union. The injured girl, Mridumudra Deka (18), was initially rushed for emergency treatment and is currently admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH). Hospital sources said her condition remains critical, and she is undergoing intensive medical care.

According to local sources, the victims were returning home from Nalbari town when the incident occurred. Both were found lying in pools of blood on the roadside, with multiple injury marks visible on their bodies.

The incident has sparked widespread outrage and concern in the area. While some groups have attempted to link the case to allegations of “love jihad,” authorities have not officially confirmed any motive behind the attack.

Residents and local organisations have demanded a thorough and impartial investigation into the incident, urging police to identify and arrest all those responsible and ensure justice for the affected families.
