Assam: Traders, residents raise alarm over filthy conditi...

Traders and local residents have raised serious concerns over the unhygienic condition of the weekly market at Juria in Assam’s Nagaon district, alleging that poor sanitation and lack of drainage facilities have turned the area into a health hazard.

Local business owners claimed that even light rainfall leads to severe waterlogging in the market due to the absence of a proper drainage system. They alleged that knee-deep water often accumulates in several parts of the market, damaging goods and causing heavy inconvenience to small traders.

“The condition of the market has become unbearable. Many times, our goods are damaged after rainwater enters the shops,” a local trader said.

Residents and traders further alleged that the market is plagued by filth, foul smell and poor sanitation, especially in the fish market section, where cleanliness is reportedly neglected.

According to traders, the market authorities are primarily focused on collecting fees while failing to maintain basic hygiene and sanitation measures.

Customers visiting the market are often forced to cover their noses because of the unbearable stench, locals claimed. The absence of adequate public toilet facilities has reportedly worsened the situation, with open urination adding to the unhygienic environment.

Several shopkeepers said they are struggling to continue business operations in such conditions and urged the district administration to intervene immediately.

Locals have appealed to the Nagaon district administration to take urgent steps to clean and maintain the market and effectively implement the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

They demanded proper drainage systems, sanitation facilities and regular cleaning drives to improve the condition of the market and ensure a healthier environment for traders and customers alike.
